Ancient fences to guide reindeers. Somewhere up there, can't locate it atm.

Nope 😌 There are some spectacular antrophogenic circular Sami features nearby however.

Will have to do some digging. Paper out on in 2037: "The zits of Varangerhalvøya"

The data are partly based on image matching, so it's not as detailed as LiDAR. But yeah, pretty low features. And many have different lithology than the underlying bedrock, which implies transport. Still strange. Too coarse to be palsas. And some are located pretty high up, cf. groundwater discharge

Pretty much more-or-less stagnant cold-based ice here, but N-ish if/when flow

Circular moraine features on the Varanger Peninsula, northern Norway, and their possible relation to polythermal ice sheet coverage This paper introduces a new hypothesis about the formation of circular moraine features (CMFs) on felsenmeer-covered plateaux of the Varanger Peninsul…

Not yet, going later this summer hopefully. Few pics here: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Just back from another coring campaign - retrieving sediment cores from basins close to ancient archeological sites, e.g. for pollen analyses. Spring is fast approaching in the lowland, but winter is still very much present around lake Røssvatnet at 65,5 degrees north. I like my job.

What software are you using?

Yes, awesome place for observing shoreline displacement, including the Younger Dryas main shoreline and the Tapes shoreline.

A watery ice sheet demise: Formation and drainage of ice-dammed lakes in southern Norway during the Early Holocene The final demise of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet in southern Norway was associated with partial glacial retreat in ice-dammed lakes, but how the subaque…

Yes, but I'm away for a week or so travelling. Check out this one in the meantime: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Jutulhogget Canyon - IUGS

This one could be, but it's impossible to say for sure, really.

Out coring for past sea level and GLOFs! We found this unit of graded gravel and sand with erosive boundaries, between a lacustrine gyttja (top) and a silty suspension sediment (bottom) 🤤 No idea what it is, yet ... Down = down core.

Perhaps the circular ablation moraines could be remnants of a pre-Wechselian ice-marginal deposit? Similar to the interpretation of Veiki moraines in Sweden being of MIS 3 age.

Veiki moraines (ice-walled lake plains) in an ~12 ka old ice-marginal zone in Finnmark, Norway. Quite similar to the "circular ablation features" posted earlier - if everything but the circular Veiki moraines is removed.

Yes, I'm struggling to see the processes behind these. Interesting take - there are multiple Veiki moraines (ice walled lake plains) in some moraine belts/zones farther west, I'll check if there's a pattern that might indicate ice-marginal deposition

Thanks, I'll dig it up. Was it this one? www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... Weird that they end up that circular.

We also have these features termed "cirular ablation moraines" (till) that is found on top of (old/ancient?) blockfields. Does anyone know of similar features elsewhere?

Preparing a new mapping area and had to share some beautiful LiDAR, as one should. Fluvial and marine processes at play during land emergence, some deflation and a sprinkle of wind-blown sand 🤩

📢 PhD opportunity at Newcastle University!

👉"Reconstructing past ice-sheet retreat and ice-ocean interactions from marine sediment cores".

This project will use new marine sediment cores to constrain the timing and drivers of past ice-sheet retreat.
