I loathe muting things permanently. One of my biggest complaints is that there isn't really a way to temporarily mute users for 6-12 months

Well tape has physical limits. As I understand, the standard was two hours because it was well balanced to have good quality, low tracking issues, and decent durability.
To get more duration you'd need thinner tape, so you could have really long tapes but it would be risky to ever watch them
