This satirical deepfake of Zelensky begging for US aid and admitting to being a corrupt drug addict is going around.

A deepfake-for-hire group made it. It has 3.6M views on TikTok, and big pro-Kremlin influencers like Aussie Cossack have shared it. It's a joke. It's also a way to launder disinfo.

Watch it (looks like some episodes are on YT). It’s cheesy and low budget in all the right ways

I’ve had a few calls recently with some criminally ambitious founders.

“I want to use AI to do everything”
“we take a systems level approach to AI”
“AI is central to our design process”

And the truth is I am so exhausted.

Where did this boundless optimism come from?

I then finished with some practical steps on how to responsibly report on IO without advancing threat actor agendas.

The talk is packaged and ready to go, so if any other media friends/partners would be interested in hearing it, shoot me a message!

I covered how journalists are targeted as dissemination vectors for influence campaigns, how journalists themselves unintentionally amplify IO narratives, and the importance of nuanced, responsible reporting around the future of generative AI use in influence operations

This morning I had the pleasure of presenting to a closed group of Guatemalan journalists and government representatives at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala on responsible reporting around foreign influence operations

Don’t Hype the Disinformation Threat Underplaying the risk helps foreign propagandists—but so does exaggerating it.

Frm @ridt.bsky.social @gavinwilde.bsky.social and @leefosterintel.bsky.social in @foreignaffairs.bsky.social: when we exaggerate the efficacy and impact of foreign influence ops, the ones who benefit the most are the very threat actors that are behind these ops www.foreignaffairs.com/russian-fede...

Don’t Hype the Disinformation Threat Underplaying the risk helps foreign propagandists—but so does exaggerating it.

“When officials exaggerate the efficacy and impact of foreign propaganda, the ones who benefit the most are the very regimes that produce it,” write @olgs7.bsky.social, @leefosterintel.bsky.social, @ridt.bsky.social, and @gavinwilde.bsky.social.

For anyone interested in the world of generative AI detection in the info ops domain, I wrote up a brief overview of a project I recently completed: Building (and Testing) Classifiers for the Detection of Artificially Generated Text www.linkedin.com/pulse/buildi...?

Excited to be speaking at this year's Mandiant mWISE Conference on the Implications of Generative AI for Cyber-Enabled Influence Operations. This will be a balanced talk discussing not only threats, but also actor constraints/limitations (not a FUD-fest!) https://mwise.mandiant.com/conf23/sessions
