The digital news media environment does not only reproduce old class structures. It reinforces them
That is the key finding in new paper led by @antoniskalog.bsky.social analyzing social inequalities in offline and online news use across 6 countries over 10 years www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

The process of developing this article, and the questions it raised shaped the ERC INEQNEWS project that I am currently leading, which examines age, gender, and class inequalities in news use and their outcomes, as well as how these inequalities could be addressed.
Education plays a key role: less educated groups are more likely to consume news offline than online, suggesting that the growing shift towards digital news could make existing education-based gaps in news use larger.
We find that online news use is consistently more unequal than offline news use, in part because a substantial share of internet users consume little or no news online.
In a new article with @richardfletcher.bsky.social and @rasmuskleis.bsky.social, we examine inequalities in news use in high-choice digital media environments. Drawing on ten years of survey data from six countries in Europe and the US, we compare offline and online news consumption patterns.🧵

Overall, there is little overlap in how these two behaviours relate to key variables during elections, yet we observe remarkable consistency across two very different countries.

We find that low news use is linked to higher belief in misinformation and lower trust in the electoral process. Selective news avoiders, however, are less likely to vote but not more misinformed.
New study with @camilambpp.bsky.social, @patyrossini.bsky.social & @lamprinirori.bsky.social on news avoidance in Greece and Brazil. We examine how different patterns of news avoidance relate to misinformation, trust and participation during elections.
Our new report on news influencers and creators is out.
It contains:
- 5 key findings (see link)
- Top 15 most mentioned news influencers and creators by survey respondents in 24 countries
- A typology of different content types (and examples of individuals that primarily produce each)

New paper on trends in trust in news across 46 countries over the past 10 years: Trust has declined more in countries where social media news use has increased and TV use has decreased. Many thanks to @richardfletcher.bsky.social for leading this effort! A summary of key findings in thread below.
