I hate to admit this but I launched my first video game and it actually FAILED. And I want to be honest with you, and with myself about the reality of it 🧵 #indiegame
...In the end, I will be finishing the game as planned even if I'm lacking the funds for it. I don't want one failed launch to put me off this whole new life journey. I chose this path and I'm staying on it.🧡
I'm not going to pretend I'm fine. It stings and I need some time to sit with that, reflect, and then get back to it. But I'm not walking away. I'm still here, still a developer and an artist, and hopefully with more support next time around.
The biggest thing I'd tell anyone building a game right now: wishlists don't equal sales, and the launch day crowd is a completely different beast from the people who followed you during development. I learned that the hard way.
The people who did play it though, some of them really connected with it. A couple of messages I got genuinely made me emotional and I'm holding on to them for my dear life and to avoid losing motivation.
I knew the odds.. i'd seen it happen to others. I think I just convinced myself that I might actually push through and avoid this situation happening to me.
That part is what gets me. It wasn't a game that came out of nowhere. There was real interest before release. But when the day actually arrived, it just.. didn't convert. And sitting with that silence was something I wasn't prepared for.
The pre launch actually looked good. Wishlists were always going up, people seemed excited. I genuinely thought I was onto something. Then launch day came and it felt like the lights just went out.
