⚙️ Strong methods and analytical skills
Students gain hands-on experience with EEG, TMS, neuroimaging, neurophysiology in animal models, and computational neuroscience, alongside strong foundations in programming and data analysis.
📚 Engaging and timely topics
Teaching and research projects cover timely themes including visual cognition, spatial navigation and #memory, #reward and #addiction, effects of social media on the brain, #psychedelics, developmental neuroscience, and computational frameworks of cognition and emotion.
Our research centres create links with other departments such as Computer Science, Biosciences, Anthropology, encouraging students to cross traditional boundaries and connect ideas across fields.
💡 Interdisciplinary and conceptually driven
Durham is ranked top 3 in the UK for interdisciplinary research (Times). In our MSc, students engage with work spanning neurobiological mechanisms, development, cognition, emotion, inner experience, clinical neuroscience, and computational neuroscience.
🧩 Embedded in interdisciplinary research centres
Our MSc sits in a network of research centres, including the Learning and Memory Processes (LAMP) Centre, the Centre for Research into Inner Experience, the Centre for Vision and Visual Cognition, and the Centre for Neurodiversity and Development.
🔬 Research-led training
@durhampsych.bsky.social is ranked top 100 worldwide (QS rankings), and @durham.ac.uk was recently named University of the Year in UK rankings.

FURTHER TRAINING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
You’ll be embedded in the Learning and Memory Processes (LAMP) Centre www.durham.ac.uk/research/ins..., a large neuroscience community. It’s a highly collaborative, cross-institutional environment with strong support for early-career researchers.
WHY SEROTONIN?
It's crucial for brain function and computation. It is involved in many cognitive and emotional functions and neuropsychiatric conditions, with renewed interest thanks to promising trials with serotonin-acting psychedelics.
TECHNICAL TRAINING
You’ll get hands-on training in:
🧪 patch-clamp electrophysiology
💡 optical serotonin release & circuit analysis
🧠 human tissue neuroscience
🧮 computational modelling of neuromodulatory systems
🤖 translating neuroscience into NeuroAI
This project is genuinely cross-scale and translational:
• mouse electrophysiology + optically released serotonin
• live human brain tissue
• computational modelling across levels
• brain-inspired AI grounded in serotonergic principles
