For weeks the authorities in Germany have been warning about the risk of Islamist attacks at Christmas markets. The suspect in last night’s attack appears to have been an anti-Islam activist who shared his support for AfD online.

What motivated the Christmas market attack in Magdeburg is still unclear. But the suspect, a doctor from Saudi Arabia who has lived in Germany since 2006 - was a supporter of AfD, Elon Musk, and ‘Tommy Robinson’ according to his social media posts and reporting by @fschmid.bsky.social
