Collections of little laminated cards, joined at the top right corner with a paper clip, contain sentence stems for different types of situations ("When you want help or information," "When you disagree," etc.)

Just because pupils can’t decode, it doesn’t mean they can’t access demanding texts.

‘That will be too hard for my class!’ is often the response when I’m making the case for providing pupils in primary and secondary with interesting demanding texts.

Nursery Child comes in from the garden: “A leaf has fallen off a tree but, that’s all right, we can fix it onto another tree. One without a leaf”

Me: “Oh?”

Child: “Another tree will look after it & the leaf will grow”

Me: “On a new tree!”

Child: “That’s how they grow so big…they help each other”

The progress from mark-making to sentences is incredible. Putting this display together reminded me of the amazing milestones children achieve on their writing journey from EYFS to Year 2!

“I have too many books”
-judgemental
-boring
-implies impulse-control issues

“The books... they have me.”
- mysterious
- occult
- implies you are at the mercy of a library of books that have gained sentience and are holding you hostage

Spotted today on the shelves of WH Smith and Sainsburys. Many texts struggling for shelf space, underrepresented against the wall of celeb to author pipeline. Lots of familiar staples that are becoming stuck in the nostalgia pendulum. @theclpe.bsky.social

Had to send one of my hearing aids off for repair today. Both need to be sent but I asked to keep one. I have had several colds this half-term and my hearing has taken a huge dip. I've always struggled with my hearing in my role but this last week has been tough.

The development of Birth to Five Matters guidance: reflections on the critical agency and collective advocacy of an English early childhood coalition In 2019, the English government embarked upon revision to the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) document and to associated non-statutory guidance. At the time, concerns were raised that...

Birth to 5 matters is such a great document and it’s wonderful to see the DFE actively sharing it and promoting its use.
This is an excellent reflection on how those in the sector can work together in the best interests of children. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

If you read anything today, let it be this: a reminder that we cannot reflect realities when many narratives distort or obscure lived experience. Inclusive narratives don't just foster empathy, they affirm identity. We need a basic standard requirement for inclusion in literature to turn this tide.

Writing one line a day in this diary has become my little daily ritual. A way to pause and reflect after a busy day. 📖🙏

Word of the day is ‘quiddler’ (19th century): one who pays great attention to trivial matters as a way of avoiding the important ones.
