It's quite possible! LoL. I was definitely treated like some stupid barbarian quite a lot of the time. Quite refreshing if I'm honest.

I don't get to swashbuckle across the world as much as I used to, now that I have kids. If I see you at the next one I'll defi say hello.

I didn't say anything about it not improving over time. Interesting article thanks.

I was also at the prince Takamoto Cup 2019, so weve definitely been in the same room. I got to meet (well bow to) the Royals that day too.

Paving over gardens & also putting astro turf on em are two pet peeves of mine.

No. I never worked with Kyle.

I was sat behind the dentsu guys working on TV.

I apologise for the wall of comments there. Was quite a lot to post.

Imo.

Rather than create something like the WFL for someone's ego and for "money". We should have found a better funder for the sport.

But here we are.

And that hardware alone, makes it unaffordable to the vast majority of tournaments.

An aside: even the elite tournaments are already loss making.

Also this tech was originally proposed around 2016. It had been in development before then. From memory it takes at least 6 cameras (costing 50k each), a team of techs & processing power. I've no doubts that the tech will have been improved since then but it still needs those cameras.

There is quite a lot to unpack. Many of us couldn't believe that it was decided that the general public wouldn't get to see the tech in action. It was a real shame. We operated the media in the hall as though there was a crowd which, because covid, there wasn't. It was a very odd games.

t has also become prey to certain countries who use the prestige of Olympic sport to legitimise their regime.

Fencing is a great sport. It is MUCH misunderstood. What it has always lacked (ironically given it's elitist rep) is money. And because it's lacked money, it hasn't had the marketing and exposure it's needed.

I'm not completely at liberty to say everything. 'it was political'.
Some people wanted it, others didn't because... it would show up certain things that are not actually as clear as you might think. eg rules in foil & sabre have grey areas around the attack that will look one way but called another

No they didn't. This tech has been known about since at least 2016. And it was in use in Tokyo 2020 - just not in the broadcast feeds. How do I know? I was in the media team.

It's worth noting that WFL will use a different rules set from actual fencing and I think they've made shit decisions mostly because I know who the consulting fencers are. Of course they want rules that favour them, or course they do. There's shades of 'lets make the goals bigger' in all of this.

While I was working Tokyo 2020. I was in the media nox sat behind the Japanese techs who definitely were using this tech. I've seen it work first hand. It's impressive.

But don't let the private equity who are trying to take over the sport steal this glory. At least pay attention. That's all I ask

Please spare me from the Science Fiction geeks pontificating on What Is Good in Fencing. I cannot read below the line for the rage. No, these people do not know what they're talking about.

I wish I WAS looking forward to the WFL. It looks like yet another US attempt to Americanise sport for no good reason. As one involved person said to me: what fencing is to be more like UFC.

UGH NO

We also had this tech for Tokyo 2020, & it was developed before then. It wasn't made for the WFL.

Quite interesting being an-fencer & successful coach seeing posts from the lay people.

I'll say this again: we had this tech in TOKYO 2020, just not in the broadcast. Why? Cos politics.

Anyway, I can't believe the UK is still dithering over these contracts.

Karp is one of them.

Verhoeven would also skewer American exceptionalism with Starship Troopers. It's not a mistake that the people who criticise it are usually male, shall we say societally challenged, Americans.

But the chats between medical teams, corporate managers & engineers as they rebuild Murphy, sublime.

And this all exists within a halo of artifacts which show, rather tell about, the world. Even the name of the corp, the reused Brutalism, its all showing.

People really don't pay attention to the detail. The obvious stuff sure, ED 209, is a deliberately created failing product designed to tie buyers into long service contracts. Unsubtle.

Palantir manifesto described as ‘ramblings of a supervillain’ amid UK contract fears Alarm caused by posts of Alex Karp, tech firm’s CEO, championing US military dominance and of AI weapons

The Robocop references are apt. Verhoeven excellently skewered American corporate exceptionalism over & over. The fake ads, the product naming - it all paints a rich picture of a deeply unwell state.

It was totally odd. I thought "maybe this is a brown out" but it was so strange to see one light on full power. One of our hall lights came on briefly at half power. I guess there are just some circuits that held enough charge for a few minutes before going out. Really strange though
