On Mother’s Day
Sharing this photo for the 1st time, a rare moment when my mother was the 1st person to see my portrait of HM The Queen mid way through the painting process.
I had just had my 2nd sitting with The Queen and my mother was staying with me, I couldn’t resist 📸
Really looking forward to being part of this discussion panel tomorrow on portraiture at 2.30. Free entry, do come along if you can.
Kindly organised by James Nicholls and hosted by Mall Galleries
I will be taking part in a panel discussion on ‘Portrait Painting Today’ at the Mall Galleries London this Saturday 14th Feb at 2.30pm, with distinguished curator Alison Smith and fellow portrait painters Frances Bell Paintings and Antony Williams.
No need to book
Great to finally see my portrait of Prof Helen Moore, President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, hung in their Hall, which dates from 1517. In pride of place too!
Helen Moore is the first female President of Corpus in its 500 year history.
The Royal Society of Portrait Painters are publishing some interesting pieces written by their artist members on the theme of ‘my teacher’
Here is my piece, which is essentially about my father

Delighted to be part of the MEAM’s annual REALISM exhibition, with my BP Portrait Award 2018 winning portrait of my mother, where the concept of time (and loss) are so embedded in the idea of the work.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The Heavens
oil on linen 147 x 102 cm
Another older work from my period of surreal, allegorical still lifes. The most ambitious painting of mine at the time, and still to this day. A whole year of focused work was dedicated entirely to this work
HAPPY CHRISTMAS!
An old one, from my period of slightly surreal, allegorical still lifes.

Progression of one of a larger work, showing key painting stages; starting with the layout drawing - the 'map' for the painting.
With more complex works I need to key in the background to a high degree before moving onto the central figure, like setting the stage for a player.
The 3rd work I will be showing at

The RP inaugural Drawing Prize 2025 'Revealing the Human' opens tomorrow at the University of Hull Art Gallery
October 3rd - November 30th
I'm delighted to be showing these drawings amongst a really strong selection of works, which you can see online on the RP website therp.co.uk
A hop through my process for a recent commission, from life drawing and observation, to layout drawing and final oil painting.
All stages help to resolve certain decisions about the final work for me.
Sound on for comments.

An insight into a recent very small drawing on panel, a reworking of an earlier idea.

This work has recently returned from an extraordinary series of exhibitions over the past 2 years - from Hangzhou and Beijing in China, to the Palacio Real in Madrid, and finally Barcelona at MEAM.
It gives me a chance to video it for the first time.
A very condensed, edited, super fast glimpse into the painting process of the red leather jacket in my recent portrait of Professor Margaret Stanley for Christ's College, Cambridge.

A new portrait of Professor Margaret Stanley, OBE, by Miriam Escofet hangs in the Hall.....
My portrait of Professor Margaret Stanley OBE, was unveiled at Christ's College, Cambridge during their Midsummer Feast.
An Hon Fellow of Christ's, best known for her work on the HPV vaccine, it's been an honour to paint such a distinguished individual, who I found to be full of warmth and humour.
