So, the storm alerts seem to have come at the perfect time in my sleep cycle for my system to be like, yep, 3 hours of sleep was all we need! It's time to start the day! And so, 2 hours later, I'm still wide awake and I know I will be very unhappy about that over the next 18 hours.

Anyway, the change in how we get news has really impacted people getting weather alerts. I think a lot of people depended on local reporters to parse alerts into action, so even when people get alerts, they don't know what to do with that info. It's tough. That communication/knowledge gap is huge.

Whereas my good ol' weather radio alerted (as did one of our cell phones), and because weather radio tells you what the alert is, I knew right away. We actually weren't in the polygon, but did basement anyway based on what I saw on radar.

It makes me really sad to see people on local social media so confused by weather alerts. It makes sense, since phone-based stuff can be so random. But some people who got alerted didn't know what it meant, and some people didn't get alerted.

SNAP work requirements don’t boost jobs, but drop participation, research finds • Minnesota Reformer As states enact stricter work requirements for the federal food stamp program, a new analysis suggests those requirements won’t enhance employment and will push more people off of food assistance.

New research again shows that stricter work requirements for SNAP don't boost employment, they just reduce participation in the program. minnesotareformer.com/2026/04/13/r...

I hate video calls and appointments so very, very much. I don't want to see myself. But my new prescriber only does telehealth, so do it I must. T-T

Trump is not capable of making sound decisions on behalf of the United States. The media should cover his unfitness for office nonstop, while Congress must move swiftly to relieve him of his responsibilities.

Anything less demonstrates a fundamental unserious attitude toward governing a superpower.

I'm old-fashioned. I want your business to have a website. Don't gimme an Instagram page and a phone number. I wanna see what services you offer and then make an appointment on a regular degular website!

Having the plot hinge on whether a chatbot responds the same way to an identical prompt is kind of way beyond suspension of disbelief for me. Curious to see if they do any more with the discussion of complete predictability vs free will in humans, though.

The most recent episode of Matlock was pretty poopy. I want the show to do well since the first season was so solid and there's been some great writing, but the past few episodes have dragged a bit, and this one felt like straight-up AI apologia, while containing essential misunderstanding of LLMs.

Sandhill cranes are some of the most dinosaur birds, IMO. Even this adorably fluffy colt still says "dinosaur" to my brain.

Sometimes a puddle seems like an annoying obstacle and then you remember that not everybirdy feels that way. Junco bath! #birds 🌿

Again, tech companies open embrace of authoritarianism and the fact that every new product is a more invasive spy device than the last one are not coincidences.

INTERPOL releases new information on globalization of scam centres

“As of March 2025, victims from 66 countries were trafficked into online scam centres, with no continent left untouched.”

Again: when you donate to shady accounts online, that money very well could actually be going to fuel slavery. I do not believe it’s worth the risk.

I've reposted an article about this in the past, and heard some stories on NPR, but the more attention this issue gets, the better. It's absolutely awful.

Uruguay’s Renewable Charge: A Small Nation, A Big Lesson For The World Uruguay built a power grid that runs 99% on renewables—at half the cost of fossil fuels. Here’s how its bold energy overhaul became a global model.

Uruguay runs on 98% renewable energy. Their government stopped subsidizing fossil fuels, and now the country has cheaper electricity than it did previously, and they no longer have to worry so much about what is happening in other countries affecting their power production.

Those smiles are just like EVERYONE THIS IS MY DAD, MY DAD WENT TO SPACE

Except the dog. The dog is like "why is the photographer waving a squeaky toy? Maybe she will throw it."

This might be the most cursed image I've ever created, but I was playing dnd and the DM mentioned how their might be some eldritch BEINGS coming up and I misheard them and so, I present to you:

Eldritch Beans.

I'm not sorry.

Mentioning this as a reminder that these missions aren't just about space flight (which is fascinating in and of itself). They also create opportunities for other sciences to learn things we wouldn't be able to otherwise. We've learned a lot about the human body from studying astronauts' experiences
