And natural gas and other sources are cheaper…

This was a fun Saturday morning read! #EnergySky #GreenSky
Calm and peaceful on campus this fine winter morning.
I remember the day as a child when we got a home PC with a dialup modem and playing some simple browser Flash games (Squirrel Invaders?). Watching a macOS update download at near Gigabit speeds this morning at home is still mind blowing with this personal historic context.
I almost forgot — black beans with onion cooked in the Instant Pot.
My meal prep while watching football today. Pork carnitas cooked sous vide overnight. Homemade red enchilada sauce using hatch chiles and homemade chicken stock, finished with pork juice from the sous vide bag. Store bought corn tortillas and cheese (need to draw the line somewhere).
Merry Christmas! 🎄 🎁 🎅 ⛪️ 🕊️ 🙏
If I ever teach Intro to Chemical Engineering, I think I’m give an exam question of unit conversations between statue (land) miles, Earth nautical miles, and Mars nautical miles. The Imperial gallons to liters task is just too cliche.
Amtrak from South Bend to Pittsburgh now has a dining car!
Teaching the older boys about recycling… my relatives in Michigan save their bottles and cans to return when we visit. The deposit gets “up cycled” in the toy aisle.
So my 3rd grader referred to the computer player in Super Smash Brothers as “AI Fox” and “AI Samus”. Two questions: where did he pick up on the AI hype? Does this mean he is now qualified to work in marketing or review proposals? (Parenting trick: we got a used Wii.)
About one month ago, I have the pleasure of teaching the short course at the University of São Paulo “Computational #Optimization in Python”. Here are free tutorial to learning how to use #Pyomo and its many power extensions: ndcbe.github.io/optimization... #OperationsResearch #OpenSource
An almost 3 year old saying “go away” to the germs while washing their hands is super cute.
In this paper, we first developed detailed design process optimization models in IDAES. Then we created algebraic surrogates using ALAMO. In a different paper, we used OMLT to consider energy system/market interactions to go beyond price taker. doi.org/10.1016/j.ap...
Yes, we (the broader team) have modeled amine-based CCS processes in IDAES!

Birthday cake for two of the boys!
One of the garage I park at near ORD has a row of plugs for level 1 chargers. But they also have two level 2 chargers: one for their shuttle and another for any customers that get in a bind.
