@laurenshof Mastodon always feels like the most echo-chambery place I'm part of on the internet.

Don't get me wrong, I really like that. But it's not necessarily what's needed for an alternative to BigTech platforms.

I'm still haunted by Naomi Klein's Doppleganger book and how we live in […]

@laurenshof "The federated social graph is a space nobody designed and nobody governs, without rules or onboarding or any mechanism for communicating what the space is for."

Users' experience of Mastodon is not guided by instance moderation but by interaction with each other.

"Mastodon was built as open infrastructure at the federation level and community at the instance level."

Really nice blog by @laurenshof on how the Mastodon community defines itself and why the protocol cannot (currently) change that.

This is a super useful reflection for those thinking about […]

LinkedIn Is Illegally Searching Your Computer Microsoft is running one of the largest corporate espionage operations in modern history. Every time any of LinkedIn’s one billion users visits linkedin.com, hidden code searches their computer for installed software, collects the results, and transmits them to LinkedIn’s servers and to third-party companies including an American-Israeli cybersecurity firm. The user is never asked. Never told. LinkedIn’s privacy policy does not mention it. Because LinkedIn knows each user’s real name, employer, and job title, it is not searching anonymous visitors. It is searching identified people at identified companies. Millions of companies. Every day. All over the world.

Slightly misleading title but Linkedin apparently scans chrome extensions to profile you.

I guess what you give the platform wasn't enough?

Another good reason to use #Firefox :firefox:

There's been some noise around ADINT (advertising intelligence) recently so I wanted to share some thoughts: bndy.org/posts/adint-reminder-sur...

TLDR; ADINT is the latest reminder that online targeted advertising is broken. It has transformed the internet into a […]

Also, this is going to sound weird but... I really enjoy my last EP

I usually never listen to what I've produced after release. But this one, I launch a track to check that everything works and end up listening to the whole thing. I just really dig it 😁

Anyway, feel free to check it out if you […]

RE: social.anartist.org/@fairplayer/116170031483...

Just integrated my faircamp site with Fairplayer 🚀

Major streaming platforms don't have artists' interests at heart and it's showing. I don't know what @fairplayer plans are for the future but anything that is open source […]

The other day my TikTok feed served me a video of someone promoting an AI generated song.

So an algorithm pushing a song created by another algorithm, using a human for promotion.

People are becoming algorithm slaves and won't question it for a sec.

Reading about MoltBook and the only thing I can think of is that this is an AI-coded site that 150,000 AI agents with unrestricted access to their users data connect to.

Sounds like a fantastic target to hack

Adam Neely exposing how AI companies feed into techno-authoritarianism was not on my 2026 bingo card.

I know it's a 1h30 music. I know the angle is Suno/music production and that might not be relevant to you. But the section from 59:00 is spot on and absolutely worth your time.

GenAI is the […]

I love mastodon, where else can I read a cool blog post someone shared, check the rest of the author's site, find out they make music and listen to their last album for an hour?

@tg is who I'm talking about and I really enjoyed this album! https://goader.bandcamp.com/track/lead-smoke-silence

The news are looking pretty gloom these days. So how about some music instead?

I just released my last EP, and even if the lyrics might be dark at time, hopefully it can bring you joy.

Apple user nightmare come true: getting locked out of your Apple ID account and all your devices because your tried to redeem an Apple card bought in a store.

I'll be honest, even as a non-Apple user this is terrifying. Also why I think it's not worth putting all your eggs the same (Big Tech) […]

I was reading this piece about AI making its way into education in China and the one I kept thinking is how a new generation is already growing with LLMs the same way I grew with the internet when my parents didn't.

I'm mostly on the side of caution with "AI", mostly because of who is building […]

A New Social (@anewsocial@mastodon.social) Today, we're launching a feature that a number of Bridgy Fed users have been asking for: notifications for unbridged interactions. You can learn more about how we've done this while also preserving the privacy of the unbridged user in our latest blog post: https://blog.anew.social/launch-dm-notifications/

This is probably the most requested feature from Bridgy Fed users - so happy to finally roll this out!
