Everyone deserves protection from harm, and no one should face abuse or punishment simply for being who they are. We urge Türkiye not to table this draft law in the legislative agenda. Together, we stand for a world where everyone, without exception, can live freely, safely, and with pride.
Disturbingly, the law would make it a crime simply to be yourself —its vague wording could see people imprisoned for up to 3 years. The proposed law targets the visibility of LGBTI+ persons & anyone who exercises free speech to speak out in their defense, turning solidarity itself into an offense.
Under this proposal, health professionals who perform medical interventions outside the strict conditions set by law could face 3 to 7 years in prison, while transgender people themselves risk 1 to 3 years’ imprisonment for accessing gender-affirming care—including hormonal treatments.
We are deeply alarmed by Türkiye’s possible draft law reintroducing forced sterilization as a requirement for legal gender recognition and imposing harsh criminal penalties on both transgender individuals and the health professionals who provide essential care.
