Earlier we were treated to a fantastic @healthhumslboro.bsky.social talk by @saralread.bsky.social where she discussed her novels ‘The Gossips’ Choice' (2020) & 'The Midwife’s Truth' (2023), and how case notes and midwifery practices in historical medical treatises are transformed into fiction.

Thackeray's image of Becky Sharp throwing the "Dixonary" from a coach window.
Happy birthday to Johnson's Dixonary, being spitefully flung out of coach windows for 271 years.

You're right, the Handmaid's Tale is such a powerful (scary) read. I heartily recommend Wanderers by @kerriandrewsuk.bsky.social. It's beautifully written. I loved the range of stories it tells (walking for creativity, independence, to find strength), and the fact it covers such a long timespan.
A stack of books sitting on a table in a spring garden. A heading reads "World Book Day x Women's History Month". The books are: All That She Carried by Tiya Miles. The Dress Diary of Mrs Anne Sykes by Kate Strasdin. They Run With Surprising Swiftness by Peter Radford. Wanderers: A History of Women Walking by Kerri Andrews. Witchcraft: A History In 13 Trials by Marion Gibson. The Five & Story of a Murder by Haillie Rubenhold.
A stack of books sitting on a table in a spring garden. A heading reads "World Book Day & Women's Fiction". The books are: Small Island by Andrea Levy. The Gossips' Choice & The Midwife's Truth by Sara Read. Testament by Kim Sherwood. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
It's #WorldBookDay & #WomensHistoryMonth, so I thought I'd share some of my favourite books by and about women. These authors are brilliant in the way they use narrative to transform historical facts into engaging stories. Have you read any of these? Which books would you add to the pile?
Here's one for all the SF horror fans out there. Enjoy!
Thank you, Esther!

My blog for the @uniofstandrews.bsky.social Library Special Collections went live yesterday! It's a very short glimpse of the thousands of women whose lives I've been researching over the last 16 months.
A white book with a black and white image featuring a coterie of women seated around a table in conversation. The book title reads 'Women and Transnational Cultural Exchange'.
It's wonderful to see advance copies of 'Women and Transnational Cultural Exchange' out in the world. I had a wonderful time editing this book with @breerob-kirk.bsky.social. More news soon on our wonderful contributors! Publication date: 19 February. @bloomsburyacademic.bsky.social

In 2025 I edited various projects (books, PhD theses, journal articles) across various disciplines (history, literature, education, business, law). One thing shared in common? Authors wanted more human support. More reflections on my year in editing: www.louiseduckling.com/blog/2025-re...
