Last night, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz joined GU Politics for a wide-ranging conversation.

Before the conversation, Amb. Waltz surprised students by popping into the Living Room for Spring 2026 Fellow Julia Nesheiwat's final discussion group!

Asked about a journalist being added to a classified Signal group chat: “People make mistakes and move forward.” He said “encrypted apps were encouraged” by the Biden administration and “the mission was highly successful.”

Asked about President Trump’s threats towards Iran via social media, Waltz says other UN nations “understand the stakes” in Iran and “if we have a couple of mean tweets to free those people, so be it.”

Elleithee asks Amb. Waltz if Congress should have authorized the use of force in Iran.

“Every Republican and Democratic administration has deemed the War Powers Act as unconstitutional,” Waltz said. “Secretary Rubio has been there almost every week. They were given sufficient notice.”

Amb. Waltz also notes that “the UN is on an absolutely unsustainable financial path. Its budget just keeps ballooning and ballooning. You know who pays it? The United States.”

When questioned on President Trump’s critique of the UN, Amb. Waltz says, “He's been critical, but he's also said there's tremendous potential, and my charge from him is to help us realize that potential."
