🗞️"Nowhere is as broken as Birmingham,” Nigel Farage said in February. “We’re going to throw everything we’ve got at those Birmingham elections.”
As he uttered those words, a bitter row was unfolding among his party in Brum.

☀️ If you’re in Perugia for @journalismfestival.com, I’m giving a talk in this cute little spot at 4pm with my friend from @zetland.dk Lea Korsgaard. The baroque surroundings will match the vibe of the session. Come! ☀️
I have three court hearings to attend in three months. Two subjects of our reporting are suing us.
Journalism is threatened by abusive legal threats aimed at silencing reporting. The Government needs to #StopSLAPPs.
Please share and write to your MP.

I love the “nah, they’ll never go to Dundee to check things out there” assumption that he made.
And that they called him on it.
‘Kenna appears to be a businessman for our times: channelling the hallucinations of chatbots and AI hype to conjure his own AI dream, and misleading plenty of people – including MPs and major companies – along the way.’
Incredible piece.

🧵 On Birmingham's historic Station Street is the nearly 120 year-old Electric Cinema. Film enthusiasts know it very well. Others might not.
But beyond film fans, the Electric could become very significant for Brum at large. At least, that's the bet of Ian Francis.
Is Chris Kenna Manchester's first AI billionaire - or a serial fantasist? He claims his company is on course for a £2.5bn valuation, with data centres up and down the country.
But in a collaborative investigation with @tbij.bsky.social, we couldn't find any. manchestermill.co.uk/is-chris-ken...
What are these teen ‘link-ups’ happening across the country? I was on the phone to my colleague Moya on Wednesday and one just started happening around her!
She’s written a very fun @birminghamdispatch.bsky.social piece about what the teens said.

📰 There's a lot of bakery beef in Glasgow but it usually involves customers and a business.
Today's story is about the bizarre events at a West End bakery, that ended with allegations of assault, coercion into signing ChatGPT, NDAs and staff on trial for 'stealing' recipes.
🚨 BREAKING: Andrew Milne arrested. "On suspicion of fraud and blackmail" as @sheffieldtribune.bsky.social reports.
Not much more we can say now that proceedings are active, but wow.

BREAKING: Andrew Milne has been arrested.
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police told The Tribune: "Detectives investigating allegations linked to the purchase and sale of freeholds in Sheffield have arrested a man on suspicion of fraud and blackmail."
*Everyone* thought Sheffield was losing the snooker - there was no chance Sheffield could match the Saudis' cash.
So how did we save it?

Ah, @ophiraophira.bsky.social at the Mill worked out which Manchester school was at the centre of last week’s book-banning story
manchestermill.co.uk/revealed-the...
How it started: How it's going:
🚨 Exclusive: We reveal the Greater Manchester school accused of banning books is part of a major Church of England academy group. They dispute the account of their former librarian.
Incredible read from @ophiraophira.bsky.social.

Everything from Camden Market to the Admiral Duncan pub and central London Harry Potter stores are owned by shell companies in tax havens.
For years, they hid the identities of their real owners. Today, @andrewkersley.bsky.social pulls back the curtain.
A police mugshot of a man.
EXCLUSIVE: The Tribune can reveal that a convicted sex offender nicknamed 'killer' worked as a director at Sheffield youth organisation Mums United.
Amar Ilyas, 41, was convicted of 20 sex offences in September 2025. He is currently on the run in Pakistan.

Our Monday briefing is out now‼️
🧵Today's top story is Birmingham Live taking the meningitis outbreak as an opportunity to fearmonger. Yesterday, the Reach PLC publication published the headline: “Birmingham student unable to walk, talk or see after catching meningitis”.
Who’s peddling a ‘persistent myth’ about local news?
Press giant Reach Plc asks you to ignore the evidence of your eyes and ears
Interested in #local #news #media #journalism? Read this! Powerful stuff from @joshih.bsky.social of @millmedia.bsky.social

Hang on a second … Reach, home of the unusable websites, generic national advertorial on local news sites, omelette-brained clickbait and paywalling LDRS content, is accusing the **BBC** of making local news provision worse?!
‘kinell 🤦🏻🙄

The MEN’s editor wants to “set the record straight” and address the “persistent myth that local journalism is in decline”.
Reach Plc has cut around *2,000 jobs* since I started @manchestermill.bsky.social and yet they persist with this brazen lie. Enough of it.

🧵The oldest building on Union Street isn't Forsyth House/Union Corner (1851), which burned down last Sunday, or the ornate Egyptian Halls (1871)
It's the Rennie Mackintosh Station Hotel, which now houses homeless people.
This IS good, it’s a better read on the issues facing universities than the vast majority of stuff one sees in the national press. I don’t know how this Manc outfit does it, but it’s really impressive.
This is excellent reporting which deftly demonstrates the weaknesses and loopholes in Companies House, before you even get to opaque trusts in overseas territories!
Attempting to track down the owner of 105 Union Street - where Sunday's city centre fire is believed to have started - has taken The Bell from Pollokshaws to South Lanarkshire, and given us insight into a retail sector regulated in the loosest sense of the word.
But we think we've done it anyway.
"Burnham has consistently called for greater government accountability... Having to be forced by journalists to release a report into how the GMCA lends hundreds of millions of pounds of public money to developers would appear at odds with that".
manchestermill.co.uk/heavily-skew...
Update on our libel case 🚨 - the businessman suing us didn’t turn up to the high court for the first hearing. Judge was unimpressed with his medical evidence.
Fighting these threats to journalism in the UK is frustrating and expensive but we will win.
