End of the season, gotta empty the galley but there isn't much time to cook. I call it “boat food”, cook with whatever is about to go bad.
Today’s menu: salad of fresh tomato, sauteed cauliflower, cubed cheddar, and fried bread sticks.

Sometimes you get the sunny, warm days with just the right wind...

Canned sardines are an underrated boat food.
Another season, another launch.
A couple of sculptures at the Barcelona marina: one for sailors and another for the people who like to watch them.
One of my fave writers on sailing. Drew Frye is not some clown on the internet with a sailboat and too much spare time. [Nervous looks around the room.] He writes *a lot*, meticulously, and in-depth, earning a few awards along the way. His blog is full of excellent info.

Fixed that nagging leak again. That’s like 10 tubes of caulking so far. Let’s hope it works this time.

50% less hacky, 100% less of a fire hazard.

”The Spaniard took a few deep breaths, exhaling, it seems to Ramage, pure garlic.” Ramage’s Signal, by Dudley Pope.
Pope had a bizarre fascination with garlic. And then there’s his lover Gianna, the Italian Marchesa, disturbingly only 17 year old. Surely she smelled of garlic, too?
It’s a long drive to the boat but I don’t complain.
A boat is like a learning catalyst. Learn how to do it or open your wallet 😆 #fiberglas #boating #sailing
Ha! I have the same radio on my boat. Analog ftw.
Hoping that power returns sooner than later in Spain & Portugal.
Indeed. I keep boat manuals on my water resistant, 30 day battery life, e-reader. For manuals that aren't already digital, I scan paper documents.

Off-season memories: Yeah, Sandbanks is a beautiful place, but there are also secret, uncrowded, magical places in PEC. July 2023.
Sorry you’re going through that. I hope you find a good way to handle it.
Good tip.
A sink drain on a boat typically isn't that long or twisty. I've had success with a piece of wire with the end turned up like a hook.
Indeed. Gotta say, though, my go-to for travel is my Nikon FE with a 35mm, a polarizing filter, and Kodak Gold 400 for blue, blue skies. No beeping, no settings, no modes. It just does what I tell it to (even when I tell it the wrong thing).
Not a lot of good sailing films out there. Here’s one that is: Styx. It’s a German film about a sailor who heads out to get away from it all. Then things get complicated not by weather but by compassion.

Photo of a painting of ancient Roman ships.
From the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. It’s a painting of Roman ships from Pompeii, a nearby town. Apparently Pompeii was next to the water back in the day but something big happened that moved the shoreline. I’ll keep you posted when they discover what that was.
Engraving of Captain Kidd burying his Bible
Captain Kidd (c. 1645-1701) was hired as pirate pest controller but he pissed off too many high-placed people by lying to them and never actually catching any pirates. In turn, they demonized him almost literally, including alleging that he buried his Bible to secure the devil’s favour.

A boat will last forever if you keep it away from water and sun.

Like clockwork, the wind and waves die down at sunset on Lake Ontario. Motoring back to the mooring.

Genius. Where were you last season?

I went to the Maritime Museum of Barcelona to see a replica of the Real (“Reial” in Catalan) galley. The original was built to kick Ottoman ass in the 16th century. Speaking of ass, how about that stern.
