Season 18 of #DragRace had some of the worst judging and most obvious production manipulation I've ever seen, but it's also the first time in ages my two favorite queens since the very beginning made it to the top two, so I can't be too mad. Congratulations Myki Meeks!

I also love that, while the film centers around a male protagonist tasked with writing love letters to American men from mostly female clients, Tanaka really foregrounds the perspectives of the women, and how they became caught between survival and social stigmatization.

Really digs deep on the hard choices thrust on Japanese women during the war and American occupation, but what struck me was Tanaka's breathtaking sense of formalism. The shot of the lovers' reunion on the train platform, into the train, and through a flashback floored me.

This movie left me speechless. Tanaka came out swinging with her first film behind the camera; a heartbreaking exploration of unrequited love and social upheaval in post-WWII Japan.
