New research note with my colleague Carla Lewandowski where we make a case for more empirical work on far-right extremism in law enforcement. Open access in Policing: An International Journal (link below):

My belief in co- and alt-responses to people in crisis is waning: Follow-up components and walk-in models must be part of the plan (plus my academic origin story)

Another great article by Riley Yates @nj.com on how NJ has taken steps to reduce police shootings.

Phenomenal reporting by Riley Yates @nj.com re: the hidden costs of deadly force on officers, departments, municipalities, and states. Happy to be a small part of the article:

Getting ready to file my taxes. My wife and I paid $23,500 for 2 kids in daycare in 2025. 1 going from 3 days/week to 5 days/week starting in September. We often ask, "Where is our money?" Childcare is a big culprit.
My book "Chasing Change in Camden: Police Reform in One of America's Most Violent Cities" won the Best Policing Book award for 2026 from the Police Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences!
I was interviewed by @amirasweilem.bsky.social from @nj.com for this article on Camden's violence reduction since 2012:

Typical sentiment of dismissal by some (maybe many) current and former law enforcement officers. This is why trying to change police culture is like "bending granite."
Check out this article in @police1.bsky.social by Chief Gerace of the Colonie, NY PD. Relevant for how we can improve training to reduce police shootings at moving vehicles.

BTW, it seems like many of these officers also violated their own DHS policy that requires rendering medical aid:
Noem doesn't seem correct here. The ICE officer is in violation of policy. Below are screenshots of the revised 2023 DHS use of force policy:
Young asks “Are you going to shoot me?’ before turning the steering wheel and putting the car in drive. The officer fired through the windshield, striking Young as the car continues to drift away while she was incapacitated. The officer was acquitted by a jury in late 2025.
In 2023, a Blendon, Ohio police officer fatally shot a 21-year-old pregnant mother named Ta’Kiya Young, which also killed her unborn baby. Dispatched to an alleged shoplifting, one officer can be seen positioning himself in front of her car with his firearm drawn and pointed.
American police shoot and injure or kill approximately 130 people each year who were perceived by officers as using a vehicle in a threatening way – accounting for more than 7% of all people injured by police gunfire.
I wrote this last year. Seems incredibly relevant today in light of the fatal ICE shooting of Renee Nicole Good:
open.substack.com/pub/johnshja...
The murder of Renee Nicole Good is a tragedy. Whether the officer's shooting was justified or not may be up to a jury to decide. It is very possible for it to be viewed as, & I hate saying this, "awful, but lawful." What's clear is that the shooting violated training AND policy.
The best use of force/firearms policies should severely restrict shooting at moving vehicles (terrorist/ramming attacks notwithstanding), while instructing officers to do everything possible to move out of the path of a moving vehicle.
Super relevant to today's events.
