Could York lead the way on proportional representation? Labour and Lib Dem councillors in York unanimously supported a motion to replace First Past the Post with proportional representation

"This is a significant moment in the ongoing campaign for electoral reform within the Labour movement." 👏👏👏

City of York is the first Labour council since the 2024 General Election to publicly call for a new voting system. @left-foot-forward.bsky.social

In 2025, only 16% of the councillors elected had majority support.

In councils across the country, landslide majorities were won on minority vote shares.

This year will be no different. When will the government accept that First Past the Post is not fit for purpose?

A really interesting article. Also a good argument against FPTP.

Orbán’s blunder: his gerrymander backfired, giving the opposition 87% of district seats [Welcome to DemocracySOS, a newsletter about the failings of America’s “winner take all” democracy, as well as proposed reforms and solutions.

In 2018, Orbán's Fidesz won 49% of the popular vote and 67% legislative seats.

In 2014, Fidesz won less than 45% of the popular vote and two-thirds of the seats.

Although the tides have now turned, Orbán's 16 years of unchecked power are a reminder: FPTP is an autocrat's best friend.

We keep hearing that "Proportional Representation would risk giving power to extremists", so let's make it clear:

Under FPTP, an extremist party could win a supermajority on a small minority of the vote.

Under PR, that's impossible.

We know what's safer.

Our political views are diverse. That's a good thing.

No one party speaks for the whole country, and our opinions cannot be reduced to a choice between two options.

It's time for a voting system that recognises this. It's time for Proportional Representation.

You're right- it should've said "why should we accept"! 60% of the public want change. It's time to get our voices heard.

When Viktor Orbán changed Hungary's voting system - making it easier for the biggest party to win supermajorities with a minority of votes - it was understandably criticised as authoritarian.

So why is it that in the UK we accept an even more disproportional system as the norm?

"Without a doubt, we'll face calls to delay this decision. However, the reality is that we have no time to waste.

We simply cannot risk ending up with a majority government that over 70% of voters didn't back."

"Our representatives are being elected on lower and lower shares of the vote, with vast swaths of the public having no voice in Parliament as a result.

Trust in politics is already at record low. The increasing disproportionality of our elections is making people lose faith in our democracy."

I recently moved from Britain to America. Here's the scary parallel I spotted - Make Votes Matter This blog is by Make Votes Matter activist Cormac Manning and reflects his own views.

🚨"Years ago, politicians who liked First Past the Post used to claim that it was needed to keep out extremists. They’ve mysteriously gone quiet on that line recently."

Around the world, winner-takes-all voting systems empower authoritarians and threaten democracy.

We cannot risk it.

OPINION: Prime Minister's Questions is more than a Punch and Judy When I knock on people’s doors, I sometimes hear the following refrain.

"In some areas, First Past the Post could mean MPs getting elected on as little as 25% or 30% of the vote.

That is not sustainable for British politics, and it is time for Proportional Representation." 💯💯💯

Great video by @richardjmurphy.bsky.social explaining why Britain's voting system leads to:

✔️ Millions of unrepresented voters
✔️ Loss of trust in democracy and greater risk of radicalisation
✔️ A toxic political culture
✔️ Worse policies

Our economy.
Our NHS.
Our education system.
The environment.
Our defence and security.
Our future.

Unless we scrap First Past the Post, they could all end up in the hands of a majority government that as few as 25% of people voted for.

We can't risk it. We need PR now.

The Commons is now in Easter recess until 13th April.

Of the 466 divisions held so far this session, 246 would have changed result if seats matched votes. That is, ~53% of the time, opposition MPs represented *more* people but the government won anyway.

Turnout in yesterday's general election in Denmark - which uses PR - was 83.7%.

In the UK in 2024, it was just 60%.

People are more motivated to vote when they know their voice will be heard. That's another reason to scrap First Past the Post.

Q. If you could pass one law tomorrow with no parliamentary obstacles, what would it be and why?
A. It's very very easy. It's the law that would change our country for the long term. It's the law that would open up so much - whether it's health and care, education, transport, social justice, environment. And that law would be to bring in Proportional Representation.

Small swings, high drama: why UK polls are less volatile than they seem – in charts In what is beginning to look like a fragmented five-party system, small swings carry outsized political consequences

"In what's looking like a fragmented five-party system, small movements can produce dramatic political consequences."

This isn't inevitable. It's the result of a broken voting system that can't cope with more than two choices.

We must scrap FPTP before it's too late.
