Final word 💬
The study shows that successful integration of #SensoryRegulation, #Theraplay, #EMDR, and #DDP requires:
❤️ Human insight
📚 Clinical knowledge
🛠️ Ongoing support systems
More research is also needed to move from theory to safe, reflective, and effective practice
Therapists & Services engaging in the integration of #SensoryRegulation #Theraplay #EMDR & #DDP should:
✅Focus on enhancing parent comfort during integration
✅Explain the “why” behind methods
✅Reflect on acceptability, not just outcome.
Better understanding = better outcomes
What helps make integration work?
📌 Safe & supportive working environments
📌 Regular, in-depth supervision
📌 Peer support
📌 Outcome measures to guide progress
Therapists, take note 👂
Therapists in the study described the integration of #sensoryregulation, #Theraplay, #EMDR, & #DDP as both powerful & challenging.
🧩 Integration requires qualification, thought, support, & skill — not random improvisation.
So What?
Real-world clinical impact 🌍🧠
Integrating #sensoryregulation #Theraplay #EMDR & #DDP is feasible & acceptable across a wide age range of adoptive parents (28–54) and children (3–13)
This is promising as integrating these models to varying degrees is already common.
Adoptive parents described therapy as tiresome but valuable: "Burdensome & Worthwhile" ⚖️
💪 “it’s all time consuming and hard work but that was… it was worth it... the ends justified the means””
The effort felt worthwhile.
Adoptive parents shared therapy pushed emotionally & they had to lean into discomfort "Finding Comfort in Discomfort"🌀
💡“You have to get through that awkwardness to come out the other side”
😟“You dont know, should I say something now should I do something will it interfere?”
Adoptive parents shared that sessions made sense but at times challenged natural parenting instincts: "Clear & Confusing" 🔄
✅ “Everything that happens in sessions makes complete sense.”
🤯 “It goes against your instincts and vision of what you should be doing.”
Adoptive parents saw real, meaningful change—but knew it wouldn't solve everything: "Impactful & Imperfect" 🌱
✨ “There really has been amazing change for all of us.”
⚠️ “You can’t solve it in [30 sessions].”
Integrating these therapies was helpful but not a miracle cure.
Therapists stated that integration provided flexibility, but also pressure: "Easier & More Challenging"⚖️
🧰 “When one therapy feels stuck, having other tools makes it easier.”
😬 “Maybe I’ve done too little of too much.”
Freedom helped but also increased burden on therapists
Therapists expressed feeling: "Self-Assurance & Apprehension" 💬
💪 “there is a variable on how the therapist is willing to take those risks.”
😟 “It could be that you feel... Maybe I shouldn’t integrate… maybe I should stick to one.”
Confidence coexisted alongside self-doubt
Therapists expressed understanding the need for integration but often questioned how to do it well: "Clarity & Ambiguity" 🔍
✅ “We’re working with complex children—they don’t come with one issue.”
❓ “When we’re mixing it… for me its a question of am I doing the right thing?”
Therapists described integration as both empowering and challenging: "Successful & Precarious" 🎭
✅ “I’ve got lots of different ways of working depending on how they present that day.”
⚠️ “If I’m not careful, I’ll end up throwing everything at them and it just becomes a mess.”
So is such integration feasible?
➡️ 8 adoptive families were offered a combined total of 240 therapy sessions
✅ 238 sessions were attended - 99% attendance
📝 28/28 therapy outcome measures were returned - 100% pre/post completion
Incredible commitment 👏
Feasibility ✅✅✅
What did we do? 🧪
To explore acceptability, we interviewed:
🔹 9 #trauma & #attachment #therapists
🔹 14 #adoptiveparents from 8 UK families
To assess feasibility, we analysed attendance patterns and outcome measure completion rates.
First of its kind 🚨
Integrating these core models is becoming more and more common in clinical practise.
This is the first study to explore how feasible and acceptable it is to integrate #SensoryRegulation, #Theraplay, #EMDR, and #DDP into one #AdoptionSupport intervention.

Excited for University of Salfords #FASD conference today, can't wait to hear leading researchers discuss best practice!
I will be presenting Chrysalis Associates research on the use of #Theraplay and #Sensory work to support children with #PAE & post-natal trauma.
Come say hey if you're there 👋
