Folks would be surprised to learn that often I hear accounts from witnesses *first*, and it’s the victim herself who isn’t willing to come forward because it’s a very, very painful process. That may persist for YEARS of leads.
Again: Reporters have no story until we get consent to tell one.

Let me reiterate: If you successfully convince women that you have the power to destroy them *before* you abuse them, you can do this stuff for decades without anyone willing to go on the record, even after reporters learn about it and dig. Without a victim willing to speak, reporters have no story.
I am pleased to say I may have been wrong about this
Really sad it’s come to this.
On my way to join my colleagues at the picket line. We deserve a fair contract!
Good morning! All day today my colleagues and I will be on STRIKE. You can help us send a message! Please do not visit ProPublica's website and tell management to give us a fair contract so we can get back to work: actionnetwork.org/petitions/te...
This remains a great piece
Oh, they did
What did I do
As we're getting closer to a collective technological mistrust, it's great that more people are starting to see the value of arts and humanities.
Strong writing, music, art, and photography.
From a sociological perspective, trust is shifting to actual human beings. Our saving grace.
We got us.
It’s very funny to include the “far left” here when the DSA mayor of New York City just ran an entire campaign on affordability and making cities work while his main opponent ran on Israel, a country almost 6,000 miles away
This is the basic funding dynamic at the CSUs, too: The institutions need more money and better administration, so for both these AAUP chapters (and others) we have to find a way to argue around "these people are not trustworthy stewards of your money. also, give them more money"
"i don't think you should murder my child"
"ugh... litmus tests"
Yeah, some of your fellow Democrats have called Israel’s actions in Gaza genocide. Do you agree with that? That’s becoming one of those new litmus tests that we said we would never do as a party again. It’s trying to throw out a word and, “Are you going to raise your hand or are you not going to?” I understand that Israel was hit with a terrorist attack the likes of which it had never seen and it has been through a lot and that it deserves the right to defend itself and to eradicate that terrorist organization. I believe that it could have been done without a lot of the suffering, but I put a lot of that blame also on Donald Trump. If he’d said we are coming in and we are bringing food and aid and you are going to make sure that we’re safe, it would’ve happened.

I mean isn't this quite a lot of history's wars?
People need to be able to hold two thoughts in their heads at once.
Huge protests full of extremely angry liberals are good for democracy. Go out and organize them to your causes.
But also, the organizers themselves do not have radical ends in mind. They are a limiting factor.
“there is no ethical consumption under capitalism“ increasingly means “I would like to not be judged for doing the least ethical consumption under capitalism”
The Washington Post® @washingt... • now Her husband started sleeping in a tent in their backyard after his wife stopped having sex with him. She's now worried about what the neighbors might think.
Incredible to go from breaking Watergate to this
In a much more lighthearted vein, Harvey
Edward Scissorhands
Whenever I’m having an organizing conversation with somebody and they complain about something “the union” has done, my immediate question is “oh, what have you tried to do to change that?” (The answers are ALWAYS instructive)
This isn’t intended to be a demobilizing statement, just trying to understand the empirical reality here so we can effectively organize
I think these are important protests but the idea that at least some of them are pretty centrist is not *completely* made up.
Having been now to No Kings events in both New York City and in Rockland County (NYC suburbs), the latter was overwhelmingly dominated by the Democratic Party and messaging about the local Republican congressman.
How powerful it feels to be involved in this organization that came together for what is apparently a secret purpose
A movement ecosystem, like any other ecosystem, doesn’t have just one kind of organism
I was at No Kings today and I thought it was really great, sorry if I lose my leftist historian street cred for that
For a free Palestine, but for a lot of other stuff first
This stuff just ends up as solipsism.
I just got an email from “Christians for a Free Palestine” that mentions neither Palestine nor God nor Christ nor Christianity nor Christians. What are we doing?
