Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping. Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

I love this paper. If you study special education teachers, or support special education teachers, you need to read it!

My org @fightforthefuture.org has been “de-googling” for the last year.

We’re totally off Google suite, Google docs, Drive, Calendar.

We’re using Signal and Element for chat, Nextcloud for docs, etc

Planning to publish a “how to” guide for other nonprofits and activist groups soonish.

Wisconsin doesn't have enough special ed teachers. Trump cut a grant that supports them Citing DEI, the Trump administration cut about $8 million in grant funds for Wisconsin K-12 special education teacher programs.

It’s disappointing that efforts to combat teacher shortages no longer aligns with this administration’s priorities www.jsonline.com/story/news/e...

However, ...

@tashnuvashaheen.bsky.social - emergency licensed special ed teachers more likely to work in self contained settings, less likely to work in inclusive settings; more likely to work with students with IDD and ASD. Such important findings regarding inequitable sorting of special ed teachers!

I TA’ed a 4-student reading class. They were also in teaching practicum. Because it was practice based we built in time for them to practice curriculum and interventions. Discussions also encouraged students to reflect on their placements and we would brainstorm based on the kiddos they worked with

This concept of "deployment of disability" gets me thinking about how teachers are crucial gatekeepers to identification for supports and services, and on the flip side, also a key leverage point when thinking about disproportionality in disability ID. Plus, I love a vignette study.
