We argue that political and institutional change is required to enable broader approaches. This may be facilitated by shifting the focus beyond quantified evaluation and economic outcomes to incorporate the human aspects of care, and emotional elements of service users’ and clinicians’ experiences.

Here we make the familiar strange and reveal how political and economic forces can produce distress and constrain care in chronic pain care settings.
