Meme. Photograph of an eel underwater. The eel is yellow in color, with a piercing eye and adorable nostril horns. We'll call her Brandabrenda. You can just see one of her fins at the edge of the picture. She looks to be smiling, but not a jovial smile. It's the uncertain but hopeful smile of a man meeting a blind date at a biker bar. Brandabrenda is swimming low in the water, just above a sandy-looking bottom. Her shadow looms just below her, a negative-spaced eel that reminds you of the fragility of meaning and the patience of the following dark.

Imagine, if you will, that this is the last eel in the world. And *you* have to break the news to her. How would you feel? Wouldn't it be better if you could tell her that a renewed focus on eels in human history has led to a revival of the species?

Let's do that. Brandbrenda deserves some good news.

Meme text reads:

Every now & again, it's useful to say why I do all these eel history tweets.

Mostly, it's because eels need our help. They're critically endangered, seeing a c.90% drop in population in the last decades.

But it's hard to get people to care! 'Cause...eels are gross & slimy. 1/2

Okay right I am in a cafe feeding both of us so let’s talk about this. It’s one of those things where it almost seems reasonable, at first: why *shouldn’t* breastfeeding be discreet? Let’s unpack that because it’s not actually reasonable.

“Statutory maternity leave allows most new mums and birthing parents to take up to 52 weeks off work.
Statutory maternity pay is paid for up to 39 weeks” right yes I wonder if anyone in government can see the GLARING PROBLEM with this

anybody who talks shit about formula in front of me gets EXPLICIT DETAILS about my breast abscess. both of my kids were EBF but I do not give a fuck, formula is a life saving invention right alongside insulin. not right for everybody but critically necessary for some

I have also gotten this, and it’s surprisingly horrible!! I had such a difficult time breastfeeding chomp, with his tongue tie, that going to exclusive pumping was honestly a relief. and I know how lucky I am that I pump well! because it’s not common! so I roll out the FULL fed is best lecture

I have emailed my MP and asked them to support this amendment. The link below makes it incredibly easy to do the same, and if you are a UK resident I very strongly encourage you to do so. Abortion is critical healthcare and we must decriminalise it NOW.

Meme. Medieval painting of Jesus talking to the Samaritan woman at the well. The painting shows a woman coming to well with a jar on her head, carrying a bucket. The well is beyond a set of city gates; there are wild-looking rocks just past the well. There's a man sitting on the well talking to the woman (Jesus showing off his prophetic chops in an effort to score a drink). There are several men coming out of the gates, looking a bit surprised (the disciples, being scandalized).

This scene is made more interesting if you imagine this as a married couple having a rather public fight. The wife is scolding the man for hanging out at the well and hitting on thirsty women, and he is defending himself by telling her that she had a giant tick on her head. Their neighbors are eves-dropping, and silently congratulating themselves on at least not being as terrible as the Andersons.

Sometimes the food goes bad before you use it. Then what?

Just don't be like Salamon Salamon! In 1390, the London fishmonger was charged w/ hiding his bad eels in someone else's cellar. This was his second offense: earlier he was caught slipping rotting eels into a local well!
