Those impacted described consistent symptoms: irregular menstruations, urogenital infections, vaginal mycoses and warts, more frequent miscarriages and, in some cases, birth defects, which they all associated with contaminated surface and well water.

⚖ Accountability for corrupt actors who harm the environment
🛡️Protection for environmental defenders
💷 More transparency & fairness in climate finance
🔎 Reforms to the lobbying regime so policy isn’t skewed towards vested interests.
If the UK is serious about a #JustTransition, it must do more to confront financial & political systems that allow environmental abuse to continue.
RAID is pleased to support recommendations in the Clean & Green Manifesto on how the UK’s anti-corruption efforts can help tackle environmental harm.👇

Cobalt is critical to the energy transition – but it must not come at the expense of people and the environment. Stronger monitoring, transparency and enforcement of Congolese law are essential.
RAID and AFREWATCH examined DRC’s largest cobalt mines – including TFM. Nearby communities reported recurring infections, menstrual health problems, growing food scarcity, changes to flora and fauna, safety concerns about the mine’s tailings dams, and worries for the future of their children.
The findings reinforce years of testimony about the destructive impacts of mining pollution on health, ecosystems and agriculture around Kolwezi’s industrial mines.
TFM is owned by CMOC Group, the world’s largest cobalt producer. Its cobalt feeds into the global EV supply chains including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Stellantis.
The investigation by @eia-news.bsky.social & PremiCongo points to large-scale sulfur dioxide emissions linked to TFM’s processing facilities since 2023. The research is based on large-scale analysis of medical records, independent air quality monitoring, and interviews with workers and communities.
OUT TODAY: New report 'Toxic Transition' raises serious concerns about pollution linked to the TFM industrial copper–cobalt mine in Kolwezi, DRC. Nearby communities report respiratory illness, nosebleeds and miscarriages. More ⬇️ eia.org/press-releas...

But the mine overlaps with unique rainforest ecosystems and has been linked to deforestation. Some farmers report forced evictions, poor consultation and water pollution, including toxic hexavalent chromium.

PT Vale Indonesia’s Sorowako block is one of the country’s largest and longest-running nickel mines and supplies global battery supply chains. Nickel from the site is processed in Canada and Japan and reaches manufacturers including Panasonic, Ford and Tesla.
Nickel is a key ingredient in many batteries powering electric vehicles and energy storage systems - making responsible sourcing increasingly important.
New reporting by @mongabay.com highlights the environmental and social impacts linked to nickel mining in Indonesia. ⬇️
A toxic mine waste landslide in Indonesia killed one worker and halted operations – the latest warning from Indonesia’s nickel boom.
Nickel demand is soaring for EV batteries and other tech. But rapid expansion is putting communities at risk. earthworks.org/blog/another... @earthworks.bsky.social
It’s not only fashion brands that present themselves as socially responsible. Companies across a range of industries – including those dependent on mineral extraction – rely on audits & certification schemes to project an image of ethical production that can be misleading. See investigation below.
