Anti-Mask Sentiment Is Making It Hard to Protect People From Wildfire Smoke The COVID-era political divide is still having ripple effects.

For @heatmap.news today, I wrote about this problem and how — given the low snowpack and the bad fire season we're almost certainly in for — breaking through that stigma will be life-or-death. heatmap.news/masks-wildfi...

Whoops, Dallas. Was wondering when autocorrect would get the better of me for living so close to The Dalles, OR.

Was tonight reminded of when I got stuck on a layover in Dalles and the airline put me in a hotel that had actually declared bankruptcy and was waiting out the last of its contracts.
As a horror buff I was over the moon. This was the middle of the day, utterly impeccable vibes.

Pancreatic cancer mRNA vaccine shows lasting results in an early trial Scientists caution that more research is needed, but nearly all of the patients who responded to the personalized vaccine are still alive six years later.

I have to laugh when I see a tradwife try to insist that the linen farm dress is, in this modern age, a conservative fashion signal and not a bisexual cottagecore mushroom people thing.

Wow I really liked Undertone! Wonderful tension, perfectly channels that fear of an empty house and things that go bump in the night.

I sincerely want old people not to schedule community meetings at 9 am on a Saturday. Jesus.

As a constituent of yours: we know that the Trump administration is driving up our food prices more than sea lions. It’s why you’re about to get primaried.

We wonder why childcare is so expensive if childcare workers are paid so little. Turns out a lot of the cost is often attributable to the construction/renovation debt that was necessary to meet childcare’s long list of building code requirements. Necessary safety features, but brutal costs.

Understandably we want childcare buildings to have not only basic safety features but ex: materials safe for kids to do what kids do and lick the walls etc.
Unfortunately this means that without public subsidy, in rural area like ours no childcare center can pencil out. Many towns here have zero.

Got a weird window into why childcare in America is so doomed at a state business support resources event last night. The organizers were lamenting how many people come to them wanting to start a childcare business and then get derailed by how financially unviable it is to build/retrofit a building.

Massive waves, high winds, and severe currents result in frequent dangerous search and rescue operations from stations like Cape Disappointment. Petty Officer Jaggers passed away fulfilling one of our most precious social contracts, and watching his partner be in this much pain, it’s so hard.

The coast guard station in Astoria is where elite units of Aviation Survival Technicians train and work. About 600 people per year need rescue from the Columbia Bar or “The Graveyard of the Pacific.”
It’s the most dangerous stretch of coastline in America, more than 700 people have died there.

A woman I knew when she lived in Hood River is the partner of that Coast Guard rescue airman who died trying to save a stroke victim in Astoria.
They were so head over heels for each other, going to be married. Seeing everything she’s going through is agonizing. I don’t even know what I’d do.

Comic. [Person and person with white hat facing two boxes stacked with $80 price tag and sale tag on each box.] PERSON 1: They want $80 for this? I could make one myself for $10 in parts, an hour of work, a trip to the hardware store, another $30 in parts, another few hours of work, two more trips to the store for $20 more in parts, another hour of work to redo the first hour of work because I messed up, and $80 to buy this when the one I made breaks.

People remember when you show up for them, and as I've seen in asking people to take some truly wild chances on me over my career, they will then show up for you.
Every time I have taken a chance to help someone with a reference, collab, endorsement, introduction, it has always come back to me.

No one of us is too big to stop and connect two people we know from different parts of our lives who could collaborate well together. Every time someone asked for a signal boost or to take a chance on supporting something they're doing or for a connection they needed to move forward, I try my best!

Often times people view personal connections like fuses they can only use once, something to be hoarded in case you need them for yourself one day.
The truth is your network is a garden, and tended you can come back to it to find enough opportunities to share with other people over and over again.

I went to Budapest a few months ago, and after this election I hope you will now feel more confident in visiting too. It’s an electric retrofuturist metropolis filled with wonderful people who really know how to live. They deserve this brighter future.
