A medieval gateway made of stone and brick. There is a large entrance to the right, and a smaller one to the left.

One of the few recognisable remains of Waltham Abbey is the main gate, built in 1369. Carts and horses used the entrance to the right, and pedestrians the one to the left.
The wall on the far side of the gateway is one of the best examples of medieval brickwork in England.

A likely date for Sappho's birthday! Sappho was a Greek poet, who wrote empassioned love poetry to and about women. Her poetry remains in fragments, the most complete is her Ode to Aphrodite. Sappho gave us the words sapphist and lesbian for women who love women.
