Halloween to Asa no Monogatari analysis:

I like to think of the Yakusoku no Yoru ending as Mei’s way of trying to process/gain closure from the trauma of losing her parents.

This is a parallel of the uncle/child relationship we see with Lenny and Seamus, and now with Mei and Kawami. Seamus watches over Lenny in death (night), and Kawami watches over Mei in life (morning)- for the sake of the deceased sister and the instinctual familial bond between them.

When Mei wakes up, she realizes that her mother and father aren’t really with her, but that it’s her uncle (Kawami) instead! When this happens, the silhouettes of Lenny o’ Lantern and Halloween Night appear through the window of a building behind them, as if watching over them.

While not fully conscious, Mei is aware that someone is picking her up and carrying her, as if taking her to bed. She thinks it’s her father (with her mother by his side), but it’s really Kawami, who finally caught up to her and is carrying her on his back.

You can interpret her parents appearing as these characters because they liked SH themselves, but I like to think that their appearance as these characters is coming from Mei. She’s using these characters she loves and finds comfort in as a reflection of the comfort she felt from her parents

Because it’s Halloween, Mei could feel a stronger connection with her deceased parents (“The Dead, who is hiding in the living, show your figure!” and “The ancient Celtic harvest festival where ancestral spirits walked among the living”).

She collapses as Kawami is running after her. After she collapses, Noël/Märchen and marie*marie/Elisabeth appear. These are Mei’s mother and father. Mei’s father picks her up and carries her on his back.

In Yakusoku no Yoru, Mei runs into a forest. It sounds like she’s running towards a lake(?) This parallels the well/ido within the forest/mori in IdoIdo and Märchen
