Charlie sips his coffee. “Well, Rex, I think we may need to pay a visit to Agnes Chapman at 555 Prince Andrew Drive. I have a feeling there might be some crimes to investigate there.” (20/20)

Charlie: Thank you for your cooperation.
He knocks on the one-way mirror.
Charlie: Take him away.
Two uniformed officers come in, cuff Chapman, and lead him away. (19/20)
Charlie leaves the room.
Rex steps off Chapman’s lap. Chapman begins scribbling furiously, periodically holding the paper up to show Rex.
Rex nods sagely. He sits. The growl slowly recedes.
Just as Chapman finishes, Charlie returns, picks up the notepad, and reads it over. (18/20)
Charlie: Make sure to show your confession to Rex when you’re done.
Chapman: You can’t possibly think he can read. Can he?
Chapman looks at Rex. Rex nods slowly, nose almost touching Chapman’s.
Charlie: Just show him the confession when you’re done. (17/20)
Chapman: And you’re taking Rex with you?
Charlie: Why? Rex quit drinking coffee weeks ago. It makes him irritable. Do you want me to get him some?
Chapman nervously shakes his head. (16/20)
Charlie stands up and places a yellow legal pad on the table in front of Chapman.
Charlie: I’m going to take a coffee break now. I’m just going to leave this notepad here, and if you want to confess, you can just write down everything you remember about the crime. (15/20)
Chapman: She’s at 555 Prince Andrew Drive. You could talk to her. She saw me that night too before I walked Fifi. She can corroborate my story.
Charlie: Nice try, but we’ve already established that you’re lying. (14/20)
Chapman: What? I mean, what? Why would I need. . .? I mean, she’ll go to my mother Agnes if anything happens to me.
Charlie: Agnes, eh? And where would we find her? (13/20)
Rex puts his front paws on Chapman’s lap and stares closely into his eyes. The growl becomes even louder and more intense.
Charlie: You know, you could be going away for a long time. I hope you’ve taken care to have your Fifi cared for properly in your absence. (12/20)
Charlie: Rex says that’s another lie. Lying to police officers is itself a crime. It will go a lot easier on you if you simply confess. I’m sure the judge will be more lenient if you explain your side of the story and show contrition.
Chapman: But I didn’t… (11/20)
Chapman: You mean the gun that your dog dug out of my gardenias? I’ve never seen it before. I have no idea how it got there.
Rex continues growling, but louder and deeper. (10/20)
Rex stands, eyes fixed on Chapman. A low growl begins deep in his chest.
Charlie: You need to calm down, sir. I suppose you also can’t explain how the murder weapon came to be buried in your garden? (9/20)
Chapman: No, there was no evidence to destroy! I didn’t do anything! There’s nothing to smell.
Charlie: Rex has a very sensitive nose.
Chapman: I can’t believe you are taking this dog’s word over mine. [Getting increasingly agitated] How can you possibly believe him? (8/20)
Chapman: No, I mean I don’t have any residue of anything. I haven’t shot anyone. And anyway I’ve washed my hands several times since last night.
Charlie: So, you are admitting to destroying evidence? (7/20)
Charlie: There’s no need. Rex says you have gun powder residue on your hands. Care to explain that?
Chapman: I can’t explain that.
Charlie: Ah, you cannot account for the residue on your hands. (6/20)
Charlie: Rex says you’re lying. Humans emit a specific scent when they lie, and Rex is trained to detect it.
Chapman: Aren’t you even going to check to see whether anyone saw me?
Rex advances on Chapman, sniffs his hand, steps back, sits and barks again. (5/20)
Charlie: So, you expect us to believe you were walking your dog at the time of the murder?
Chapman: Yes, I’m sure someone saw us walking. Anyway, I don’t even know who this murder victim was.
Rex barks and steps forward aggressively, focused on Chapman’s face. (4/20)
Chapman (continues): But didn’t you know that? You and your dog Rex saw us at the market just the other day.
Charlie: Interesting. You say Fifi likes long walks on the beach?
Charlie and Rex exchange a thoughtful look. (3/20)
Charlie: Mr. Chapman, can you account for your whereabouts last night at about 9:30?
Chapman: I was walking my dog Fifi down by the beach.
Charlie: Your dog Fifi?
Chapman: Yes, Fifi is my grand champion German Shepherd Dog bitch. (2/20)
Homage to the Canadian cop show Hudson and Rex with the German Shepherd Dog Rex.
An interrogation room, suspect in a chair, Rex sits in a corner, eyes fixed on the suspect’s face.
Charlie, the human police officer, sits opposite the suspect. (1/20)
