Happy Earth Day 🌎

Louisiana’s native plants don’t just look beautiful, they are Earth Day in action. They clean our air and water, feed our wildlife, and thrive without extra fuss.

Whether it’s a full pollinator garden or one humble native milkweed, it all matters.

Caterpillars on native plants are natures VIPs.
More than future butterflies or moths, they’re Very Important Protein sources. Some finish as butterflies or moths that have important jobs pollinating, while others finish by fulfilling their role in the food chain as vital sustenance for others.

If you had to pick one native plant that thrives in heat, poor soil, and still blooms like crazy…

Gaillardia would be hard to beat. 🌼

Bright color, low maintenance, and a favorite for pollinators.

👉 Is this one in your landscape?

Not everything valuable in a landscape is soft, tidy, or easy to handle. This native thistle is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. Butterflies, native bees, and pollinators rely on plants like this, especially when options are limited. Those seed heads are an important food source for birds.

We’ve lost more than 200 native plant species in the USA since the 19th century. It’s not slowing down. Habitat loss, invasive species, extreme weather. We’re watching the foundation of our ecosystems disappear. Native plants aren’t just “nice landscaping”. They are the system. Protect natives.

Dewberry and Blackberry. These plants produce white flowers that provide important early season nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Those flowers develop into fruit that is widely used by birds, small mammals, turtles and other wildlife, including humans!

Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica) is hard to beat. Favorite of hummingbirds. It's native to the southeastern United States and fits beautifully into shaded native plant gardens where it adds bold color just as spring gets underway. It's especially well suited to woodland gardens.

Many popular ornamental trees from other parts of the world support very little local wildlife. A Japanese maple may host only a handful of insect species. Compared to a native oak tree, which can support hundreds of species of caterpillars and insects. When you plant native, you plant for habitat.

These are all aggressive growers that spread quickly and crowd out native plants. They can form dense mats or stands that reduce plant diversity, alter habitat, and make it harder for native species to return. They provide little for native wildlife. Early management can make a big difference.

They may be pretty but they’re invasive.
Not every plant belongs in our landscape. Some popular ornamentals escape gardens and take over, crowding out native plants. When invasive plants take over, we lose the native plants that feed caterpillars, pollinators, birds, and the entire food web.

Most people never see the fight… but across Louisiana, crews, scientists, and volunteers are constantly battling invasive plants to protect our forests, wetlands, and waterways. Planting natives isn’t just landscaping — it’s prevention.

🌿Plant native. Help Louisiana stay wild.

Scarlet Sage has pretty tubular red flowers.

Scarlet Sage (Salvia coccinea) thrives in our heat, humidity, and long growing seasons. Those tubular red flowers are especially perfect for hummingbirds, making this plant a consistent wildlife favorite.

Amorpha may be one of the quieter native plants in the landscape, but it delivers in a big way. When it blooms, it becomes a magnet for native pollinators, and unlike many plants, Amorpha doesn’t stop after just one round. A second bloom means a second wave of activity. #NativePlants #Louisiana
