Listen to Michael. Save the AYCC: www.aycc.org.au/emergencyapp...
I should do a thread of prominent Australian climate advocates and the roles that they had at AYCC during their formative years.
Honestly the idea of doing it kind of exhausts me, because it would be so, so, so bloody long.
There’s an argument to be made that AYCC might be the single most effective Australian climate organisation to donate to. The sheer proportion of campaigners/advocates that have had some AYCC interaction over the years is pretty remarkable.
So the AYCC emergency appeal is on track for success. My understanding is the total shown on the site only shows donations through raisely, not including offline pledges or bank transfers.
The true figure is at least 2x, possibly 3x or more, what is shown. 💛
This is hopeful one day in, BUT...
"...new carbon intensive projects, such as coal mines and oil and gas fields, could be restricted by government regulations influenced by the [International Court of Justice's advisory opinion] while projects that have been approved could be challenged through the courts"

This creates an environment where increased regulation of fossil fuels and emissions intensive industries becomes an expectation, not a hypothetical. Company directors must consider these risks, or they could be found to have breached their fiduciary duties.
These risks are amplified in the wake of the recent ICJ Advisory Opinion on climate, which stressed the increased obligations that nations have to restrict and phase out fossil fuel use. Countries that fail properly control fossil fuel use could be liable for internationally wrongful acts.
Today, Climate Integrity has launched a new legal advice that describes the increasing climate risks that Australian companies and their directors may be exposed to.

huge news! I had the pleasure of working with Shane, and it is hard to find someone who approached politics with as much integrity and energy as Shane does.
He'll leave big shoes to fill both within the ACT Greens, but also the ACT legislative assembly.

You might be able to tread water domestically, but once you enter the international sphere, being run by mediocre leaders really is nothing but a vulnerability that will get exploited.
An unfortunate feature of the Iran war is that - while being evil and should be push out of power - the Iranian regime is simply smarter than the Trump administration.

holy shit
'According to the government’s figures, net emissions fell by 7MT in 2024-25. This will be entirely undone by the North-West Gas shelf expansion – approved during the same period - which will add 7.7 million tonnes to Australia’s Scope 1 emissions each year.'

Fossil fuel infrastructure is simply just not reliable. It’s not there when you need it most.

If you allow liberal use of carbon offsets in a compliance scheme, big emitters will indeed gorge.

Now 75% of the way there, which is amazing. Thank you to those who have contributed!
Did emissions under the Safeguard Mechanism really decline by 2.3%, or is that mostly driven by the 11 facilities that are no longer covered?
Sorry, two former Labor politicians gunning to lead one of Australia’s largest fossil fuel lobby groups?

Friends! I'm doing the classic millennial mid-life crisis thing: running the Sydney Marathon to raise funds for the RSPCA.
Full disclosure: hitting my target is my ticket to run (2/3 there!). It helps animals who need it, a win-win. Please support if you can.

The fossil fuel industry will never waste an opportunity to use a crisis to further their own interests.

What does it say about the nature of your business if the announcement of a ceasefire results in your market value falling by almost 10%
Are you Sydney based and interested in climate law?
