Listen to Michael. Save the AYCC: www.aycc.org.au/emergencyapp...

I should do a thread of prominent Australian climate advocates and the roles that they had at AYCC during their formative years.

Honestly the idea of doing it kind of exhausts me, because it would be so, so, so bloody long.

There’s an argument to be made that AYCC might be the single most effective Australian climate organisation to donate to. The sheer proportion of campaigners/advocates that have had some AYCC interaction over the years is pretty remarkable.

So the AYCC emergency appeal is on track for success. My understanding is the total shown on the site only shows donations through raisely, not including offline pledges or bank transfers.

The true figure is at least 2x, possibly 3x or more, what is shown. 💛

This is hopeful one day in, BUT...

Labor’s top lawyer warns of wave of oil and gas legal action The government’s new solicitor-general says boards of Australian oil and gas companies could face a wave of legal action due to an offshore climate ruling.

"...new carbon intensive projects, such as coal mines and oil and gas fields, could be restricted by government regulations influenced by the [International Court of Justice's advisory opinion] while projects that have been approved could be challenged through the courts"

This creates an environment where increased regulation of fossil fuels and emissions intensive industries becomes an expectation, not a hypothetical. Company directors must consider these risks, or they could be found to have breached their fiduciary duties.

These risks are amplified in the wake of the recent ICJ Advisory Opinion on climate, which stressed the increased obligations that nations have to restrict and phase out fossil fuel use. Countries that fail properly control fossil fuel use could be liable for internationally wrongful acts.

ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury announces politics departure He has been a part of the Legislative Assembly since 2008.

huge news! I had the pleasure of working with Shane, and it is hard to find someone who approached politics with as much integrity and energy as Shane does.
He'll leave big shoes to fill both within the ACT Greens, but also the ACT legislative assembly.

You might be able to tread water domestically, but once you enter the international sphere, being run by mediocre leaders really is nothing but a vulnerability that will get exploited.

An unfortunate feature of the Iran war is that - while being evil and should be push out of power - the Iranian regime is simply smarter than the Trump administration.

Latest Safeguard Mechanism data shows Australia’s centrepiece climate policy is primarily a clearinghouse for low-integrity offsets — Climate Integrity The latest data published by the CER shows industrial emitters relying heavily on the use of offsets to meet emissions reductions under the Safeguard Mechanism, rather than investing in long-term, sys...

'According to the government’s figures, net emissions fell by 7MT in 2024-25. This will be entirely undone by the North-West Gas shelf expansion – approved during the same period - which will add 7.7 million tonnes to Australia’s Scope 1 emissions each year.'

Fossil fuel infrastructure is simply just not reliable. It’s not there when you need it most.

Mining companies gorge on carbon credits under Labor climate scheme Mining giants Rio Tinto and Woodside each used more than 1 million carbon credits last year to meet obligations under Labor’s flagship emissions policy.

If you allow liberal use of carbon offsets in a compliance scheme, big emitters will indeed gorge.

Did emissions under the Safeguard Mechanism really decline by 2.3%, or is that mostly driven by the 11 facilities that are no longer covered?
