Nobody's perfect but she's kind, helpful, amazing in class, amazing in the lab, gets awards left and right.
Oh well... I need to get some sort of tear duct surgery before her graduation ๐ฎโ๐จ

It's going to sound "crazy" and I know it's part of the game but I already miss one of my students and she still has 2.5 years left lol.
She is so amazing and time goes so fast... I'm dreading the summer of 2028 as she'll move on to greener pastures.
Turns out your friend above may be protecting you from a lot of things but fleas aren't one of them.
Can't wait to share our data on flea-borne pathogens in fleas collected in churches.
There's truly nothing like Bartonella phylogenetic analyses to ruin a perfect day...
My neighbors and I were talking about how it seems like no matter how transparent we try to be as scientists, some people will always believe we're trying to hide something.
Their 8yo then said: how can you guys be hiding something when you talk about your work AAAALLL THE TIMMEEE to ANYBODY?
Honestly, these COAs sometimes make me doubt whether I really need to submit those grants... Just horrible

As we say back home... c'est la fรชte du slip.
Isn't this one of the best things your grad students can tell you? ๐ฅน
I saw last week that two ladies who provide "culturally aware mentorship training" ONLINE charge $54k PER SESSION (one afternoon) for 12 people. 54k USD.
Gilead has a drug that could prevent HIV with just 2 injections a year. MSF said "we'll buy it name your price." Gilead said no.
Let that sink in. Pharmacological innovation without access for those who need it does not accomplish its potential.

There sooooo many examples of this, plenty of them found in The Economist, that even with all the good faith in the world, it's becoming really hard to dispute ๐
Gotta admire your tenacity!
Thank you for being relentless about sharing this important message despite the barrage of agressive disinformation.
โThere has to be a point where, as a government, we say, โYouโre responsible for your actions, and youโre responsible for your safety,โโ
This has to be one of the wildest public health takes I've seen in a minute.
What do they think their responsibilities are?

Where did Ezra Klein come from? Can he go back?
Lab lunch for my 34th birthday! ๐
Isn't he cute? Ceratophyllus gallinae (or the hen flea).
My friend sent me this after asking where I thought Bhattacharya was going for my birthday. I guessed he was going on Katie Miller's podcast... I wasn't too far from the truth lol
Can someone explain to me like I'm 5 why something as important as qualifying exams isn't standardized across institutions and across departments within the same institution?
Of course, the type of department (PH vs basic science for example) plays a role but other than that...?
Same here.
Love an em dash.
Love a "not only xyz, but abc"
Love bullet points and a "i)..., ii)..., and iii)..."
Now I'm kind of worried about my grants being flagged as AI generated ๐ซ

And then the mosquitoes... the sweaty hands you have to shake... the random fly in your drink... And the mosquitoes!!!!
Just rude...
I said it looks like a Predator (from the movie), my student said it looks like Hitler. I guess we both agree with you lol

I got a DM asking if I think it's reasonable to empathize with these parents right now.
1. You don't achieve anything meaningful by calling people stupid.
2. The only difference between me and the hesitant people is that I already have the answers to my questions because of my education.
You know what's funny? People always accuse scientists of being disconnected from reality, caring only about their science.
They have no idea how much empathy and understanding of the broader picture is required for good Public Health work.
So you get stuff like this...
