“This bill forces homeless people charged with a crime to make the false choice between jail or at least one year of forced treatment. Louisiana has a long history—and present—of chain gangs, prison labor, and entrenched white supremacy" says @homelesslaw.bsky.social

Democracy will not come
Today, this year
  Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.

I have as much right
As the other fellow has
 To stand
On my two feet
And own the land.

I tire so of hearing people say,
Let things take their course.
Tomorrow is another day.
I do not need my freedom when I'm dead.
I cannot live on tomorrow's bread.

     Freedom
     Is a strong seed
     Planted
     In a great need.

     I live here, too.
     I want freedom
     Just as you.

Langston Hughes

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek orders schools to maintain instructional hours: What happens now? Oregon is made up of over 200 schools and education service districts, and the governor’s instructional time order won’t land the same everywhere.

So the governor has said my district cannot take furlough days, which means more RIFs, & the already razor-thin elective offerings for kids will just be a gaping hole. This is such an unbelievably bad move, @tinakotek.bsky.social.

personally I agree that we should indeed reject the hollow pluralism of pretending that we shouldn't judge Klan, Nazi, and sparkling eugenicist subcultures according to what they have historically produced, and would enthusiastically endorse rejecting inclusion of them in public life

I wish more educators and fewer lawyers would run for public office, in part b/c the best ones are naturals at explaining the whys of things.

We could use more people in public life who cultivate understanding and bring people along together instead of "voters are too dumb to appreciate language"

Palantir is also claiming in this same statement that Germany went too far in constructing its postwar identity around guilt for the Holocaust, which is the exact narrative that the German far-right is running on and winning in elections.

I consistently repeat to folks that they do not in fact ever *succeed* on their own. Sometimes the assistance is visible, often it is submerged. None of the USian billionaires *succeeded* on their own. In fact, most of them continue to benefit from your money, labor, etc....

We saw two day laborers, pushing a cart of supplies and a generator. Our mutual aid table called them over and gave them free dinners, water and clothes.

We fed folks that were unhoused. And folks who came out their apartments just to come to us.

It’s why our mutual aid is called Everybody Eats.

US budgets less for improving lives, more for ending them. Discretionary spending by function, constant 2026 dollars. This chart shows war spending increasing steadily since 2017 and shows public investment spending peaking in 2020 before steadily falling ever since. Trump’s 2027 budget includes $1.5 trillion in war spending and only $432.3 billion in public investment. Amounts reflect discretionary funding plus supplemental discretionary funding via reconciliation. Budget function 050 in war category; others minus 700, 750 in public investment. Data: Office of Management and Budget, Congressional Research Service.

According to ICE 35% of arrests are "collateral", but looking at individual cases "targeted" arrests wete not at all targeted. Abolish ICE.

Despite the administration’s rhetoric and bogus legal theories, the supposed armed conflict with “narco-terrorists” appears to be entirely make believe.

Murder is the general term for premeditated killing outside of armed conflict.

AI Use Appears to Have a "Boiling Frog" Effect on Human Cognition, New Study Warns A new study claims to offer the first causal link between AI dependency and cognitive erosion. Researchers warn of long-term implications.

NEW: A new pre-print study offers the first causal evidence that outsourcing reasoning tasks to AI can rapidly erode users' independent performance AND their will to persist despite difficulty.

"People’s persistence drops... they’re also not willing to try without AI.”
