Completely. It's not some terrible drain on my time which I hate, or some magical/uncontrollable thing where I sit and anxiously wait to be struck by inspiration, it's this process that I can control and structure and use to make my writing even better. And, like you say, actually enjoy it!

Totally! The 'wait and percolate' part has been a revelation for me recently, particularly in my approach to acting work. Self-trust developing alongside your brain adapting to the demand for ideas - and suddenly the actual process is more pleasurable

Your goal in first drafts (likewise in rehearsal, sports practice etc) is not to excel, it's just to do. If you do *something* you have absolutely succeeded. Value judgements are poisonous at the earliest stages of work

It's very easy to condition yourself into hating writing purely based on the way you attack yourself for not creating flawless work first time. It's hard to unlearn bc it's tied to self esteem but really worth moving towards a more compassionate attitude to yourself

Sometimes it's less a fear of being bad, and more of the narrative you're going to spin about yourself if you make something imperfect - your inner critic is overactive and causing you pain. Who'd want to write if they felt the psychological equivalent of stepping on Lego whenever they did anything?
