A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

More context on this #Artemis II image:

* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right

* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:

Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War A statement from our CEO on national security uses of AI

Amodeiโ€™s statement today deserves careful reading. @anthropic.com says it refuses to enable mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons on democratic grounds.

One of the largest tech companies is publicly defending civil liberties against government pressure, and this is meaningful.

Quilicura, Chile, one of the communities I wrote about in EMPIRE OF AI, has launched a brilliant initiative to inspire more responsible AI prompting. Today, don't use AI; ask the townspeople instead: quili.ai. So heartened to see this creative act of resistance.

We canโ€™t ignore the largest source of methane Food is the largest source of human-caused methane โ€“ we ignore it at our peril

Three facts:

- Methane has caused ~30% of the warming we have seen so far.

- Curbing methane emissions is also one of the fastest ways to bend the curve on future warming. Itโ€™s a โ€œemergency brakeโ€.

- And the food system emits over half of global methane emissions.

RealClimate: High-resolution โ€˜fingerprintโ€™ images reveal a weakening Atlantic Ocean circulation (AMOC) The #AMOC is the reason for Europeโ€™s mild climate. Evidence that it is slowing has been piling up over the years โ€“ it now is likely at its weakest in at least a millennium, and it may even be approach...

High resolution images from satellite and from eddy-resolving ocean circulation models point to an ongoing decline of the Atlantic overturning circulation, a key ocean current for our climate. Read more about it in my new blog article. ๐ŸŒŠ

Scientific illustration showing a cross-section of Saturnโ€™s moon Enceladus. It features three labelled layers: An ice shell at the top, with visible cracks releasing jets of water vapour into space; an ocean in the middle, depicted as a large body of water beneath the ice; a rocky core at the bottom, shown emitting heat that may drive the jets. In the background, Saturn and its rings are visible in space.

๐Ÿ†• The discovery of new complex organic molecules at Saturn's #Enceladus enhances the likelihood that the moon is habitable ๐Ÿช

On Earth, these molecules are involved in chemical reaction chains that lead to the more complex molecules essential for life.

I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.
Our paper on that is out today.๐Ÿงต
