Just last week, at the top of this episode, @quinnslobodian.com, @bentarnoff.com, & I discussed the challenges facing historians in the internet era, which include planned obsolescence, slop tsunamis, austerization, etc. Internet Archive is one of the few orgs between us & archive death...
He's been an inept mob boss for decades. A thug w/6 bankruptcies doing shakedowns.
"Trump still seems to believe that negotiations he has as president are basically the same as strong-arming a small business into giving him a better deal on some new curtains for one of his hotels."

Boston Globe mock front page from April 9, 2016. Date says April 9, 2017, with giant headline “DEPORTATIONS TO BEGIN” and “Markets sink as trade war looms.”
Ten years ago today, in April 2016, the Boston Globe printed a satirical front page imagining a future Trump administration. The page was called "alarmist," "hyperbolic," "dystopian." But we’ve put up with so much since then it now looks like . . . a slow Thursday?
Sánchez: “You may have heard that Spain is alone. They’re the same people who said that when we recognized the State of Palestine, and then others followed.
“We are not alone — we are the first. Those who will end up alone are the ones defending the indefensible.”

Prodded by the Trump administration, the justices threw out an appellate ruling upholding Bannon’s conviction for defying a subpoena from the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack by a mob of Trump supporters on the U.S. Capitol.
The Roberts Court just gave Steve Bannon a symbolic win with alarming implications for Democrats, should they retake the House/Congress in the midterms. The lawless hacks at SCOTUS might be signaling that they'll greenlight stonewalling congressional oversight & subpoenas

This is what I'm talking about. Vince McMahon is a case study in depravity. His behavior (with his wife, now Trump's Education Secretary Linda, allegedly covering up for his predatory behavior for years), is detailed by Janel Grant in her declaration against him.

from the Guardian 'Unhinged madman': US politicians react to Trump's expletive-laden threat to Iran Marjorie Taylor Greene and Bernie Sanders among those responding with alarm to Trump writing 'open the fuckin' strait, you crazy bastards'
now THAT’S how a major publication should write a lede www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
it's worth noting that the quote they went out of their way to make look stupid was expressing a reasonable point — a restatement of the long-standing official US policy in fact! — and the quote they clean up and sanitize is expressing a deranged threat of war crimes in an illegal conflict
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR, dissenting from the denial of certiorari. Petitioner Priscilla Villarreal is a reporter who was arrested for doing something journalists do every day: posing questions to a public official. Specifically, Villarreal twice texted with a police officer to corroborate information Villarreal already knew about events that had occurred within her community. That officer voluntarily provided the information Villarreal sought, and Villarreal published those facts, consistent with her role as a journalist. Six months later, Villarreal was arrested for asking those questions. Making matters worse, Villarreal alleges that the arrest followed a months-long effort by a police department and district attorney’s office to retaliate against her because they disliked much of her reporting on their activities. Of course, that reporting was often critical of them. It should be obvious that this arrest violated the First Amendment. Yet the Fifth Circuit held that the officials were entitled to qualified immunity, and now Villarreal is left without a remedy. The Court today makes a grave error by declining to hear this case.
The Supreme Court refuses to review an odious 5th Circuit decision granting qualified immunity to Texas officials who arrested a citizens-journalist in retaliation against her posing questions to public officials. Sotomayor has an appropriately furious dissent: www.supremecourt.gov/orders/court...
If there is going to be a reckoning about violence in progressive organizing spaces, we need to be prepared to hear survivors’ critiques of restorative justice.
A lot of progressives think restorative justice is the only path forward, but it can be weaponized and co-opted just like other processes.
if there's one conclusion that the study of both labor history and imperialism converge on, it is that the richest people in the world are happy to burn money on control, power, impunity. and the "everything is about profit" version of anti-capitalism does not survive serious contact with either
Remember when Google's corporate mission was "Don't be evil"?
That was a long time ago.

goddamn is this a breath of fresh air after Allred 2024
I think this deserves at least as much sustained attention from US media as Claudine Gay's dissertation
A Klan lawyer was assigned to represent a Black man, Rocky Meyers. Meyers is still in prison. How many other people did this Klan lawyer represent who languish in prison?
I think this is a great argument, beautifully constructed
JUST IN: North Carolina's Dem lawmaker Carla Cunningham gave the GOP the decisive vote to pass a law forcing police to comply with ICE. She said "all cultures are not equal."
She just lost reelection BIG in the Dem primary to a progressive pastor & activist, Rodney Sadler. 70% to 22%!
Context:
in a free market, X would be dead and Elon Musk would not be able to open a credit card. This is not a free market, and the people who tried to organize a boycott against a bad website got sued out of existence.
i actually think this is the wrong way to think about the direction this is going. fox news is the default channel in many public spaces — most troublingly, us military bases, has been for decades. this was not a matter of policy afaik, it just slid into place. it's not hard to lock it in as policy.
The first elected Dem in history to understand how Trump operates (memes, vibes, kayfabe, projecting a fantasy image until it becomes reality) and to manipulate him the way his own White House staff do
my thoughts on this paper
and that, my fellow academics, is one reason not to hire war criminals: so they can't show up years post (their) war arguing in favor of the scaffolding behind their own atrocities with the imprimatur and status of your university
We didn't arrest the torture memo guy and now he's just free to walk around saying "having a dictator is fine" and being quoted by the same news entity that the dictator in question cut the funding for.
Trump plans to send $10 billion in funds that Congress hasn’t appropriated from the US Treasury to an organization that he will continue to chair personally even after he is out of office.
This is looting.
because when people from there talk to them and tell them it's not their socialist utopia, they say we are "westernised liberals", traitors, or whatever
I’ve watched a very smart child try to encode what chaptgpt thinks is “human” so that her class assignments don’t get flagged for plagiarism.
I’ve heard expert professionals admit to self-editing so they don’t “sound” like an llm.
This is the kind of cultural flattening that accelerates fascism.
Have you ever once seen the New York Times quote Trump like this?
