If you're looking for a calming read, Snyder is THE expert on dictatorships and he says that none of the ways Trump would try to cancel or annul an election should work. He runs down five motivations for coups, and Trump probably can't pull any of them off.

If Trump intends to attempt a coup, here are five ways he could do it Despite the debacle in Iran, a president at war has several pressure points at his disposal to postpone, restrict and ultimately cancel democracy, writes the historian

You need to read this.

@timothysnyder.bsky.social has been warning us since 2016 about Trump. He knows: he’s one of world’s leading experts on authoritarianism & always ahead of the game.

V proud to publish him in @thenerve.news. He’s an essential voice.

Over on Twitter I’ve been waiting for Andrew Neil to say something *anything* about Orban & Hungary. He’s been uncharacteristically quiet 🤔

It builds on Alice’s great deep dive for @goodlawproject.org on how Orban’s thinktanks funded by Russian oil pay vast sums to Roger Scuton Legacy Foundation (whose directors include Michael Gove & James Orr) + £10k/month to Britain’s favourite AI-enhanced failed politician MattGPT

Could MattGPT face scrutiny under the UK’s ‘proceeds of crime’ law? The British right is awash with money from Orban thinktanks…which Hungary’s new PM says was stolen.

Brilliant deep dive into Orban’s vast UK network by @McCoolingtons
for @thenerve_news. 👏

AI chatbots are fuelling a new era of violence against women From "sycophantic" chatbots to deepfake sexual abuse, the dehumanisation of women is the calculated cost of untested, unregulated AI.

Chatbots are devastating lives, right now, fuelling a new era of gender-based violence

How much more evidence is needed before this is taken seriously?

Oh, FGS -

@politico.com is taking sponsorship money from Palantir - running their ads through news updates.

That's absolutely the *last* thing we need in our politics, Palantir going straight for the political-media environment at a time when we need massive scrutiny of their contracts in the UK.

"The world witnessed what happened in Gaza. It’s happening again now. It’s planned, systematic and is happening in plain sight, while a US president threatens civilisational erasure and what’s left of the international order collapses. It’s Gaza that’s made this possible.

I’ve known Lebanon for three decades. What’s happening now is an invasion.

This is Gaza 2.0 – and the world is barely paying attention.

"Israel’s greatest victory to date may be the reality distortion that it’s managed to create around its war on Lebanon, even as it’s killed 1,500 people and laid claim to its land."

Meanwhile, the international press is using Israel’s fake language & euphemisms. These are all headlines from the international media. It’s not a ground operation’ or a ‘security buffer zone’. It’s an INVASION. These are war crimes.

I'd really like to see leadership calling for impeachment and removal, regardless of whether they have the votes to get it done. Same way we called for marriage equality before we had the votes. A leader's job is to lead. If a genocidal threat isn't impeachable, then nothing is.

Journocide Targeting journalists and killing them with impunity isn't just a war crime, it's a warning of what comes next

NEW: It’s a journocide. Israel admits to targeting & killing three more journalists & making up false evidence.

Journalists in the west have a moral responsibility to speak up. The blowback from this impunity is coming next for us all.

Does Mohammed Bin Salman ("Mr Bonesaw": whom the CIA concluded ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi) own a piece of The Observer?

It’s a pretty basic question. Does this guy own a chunk of our oldest Sunday newspaper @theobserveruk.bsky.social. And why won’t you tell us @theguardian.com?
11/

3 weeks ago 552 185 17 2

There may be a perfectly innocent explanation why the Observer is refusing to disclose the real identity of an opaque investor who happens to share an address with a private equity firm that’s taken a ton of cash from Mr Bonesaw…

That’s why we send right to reply letters: to get the facts

I don’t know who’s behind the North Hatley Trust. Does the Guardian?

It should. It’s a co investor. So why on earth would a liberal news org that champions accountability refuse to answer basic journalistic inquiries?

It’s rupture of another important norm.

a dirt road going through a desert landscape with mountains in the background ALT: a dirt road going through a desert landscape with mountains in the background

Patrick Healy, Hellman & Friedman, the Observer & Ole Jacob Sunde did not respond to my press inquiries.

The Guardian did respond but only to say it did not wish to comment.

Why the secrecy? What’s there to hide? What is the North Hatley Trust? And who owns our oldest Sunday newspaper?

The chair of the Scott Trust - which owns the Guardian - Ole Jacob Sunde told press freedom groups the same thing.

But why is an anonymous vehicle based at Hellman & Friedman’s offices being used to invest in the Obs?

Who’s behind it? And - crucially why won’t the Obs or Guardian say?
7/

3 weeks ago 204 38 2 0

When James Harding presented his vision for the Obs in the Guardian office, I asked him whether Patrick Healy was a fit & proper person to own our newspaper given his firm’s investment from a renowned journalist killer.

He assured us Healy had invested in a personal capacity only.

And just so we’re clear about what that is & who’s behind it. It’s this guy: crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman. Aka Mr Bonesaw to you.

The man the CIA concluded ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
