Great article from @rboyle31.bsky.social on mysterious Little Red Dots and how they might represent a class of objects we've never really seen before: a stellar atmosphere powered by black hole accretion.

stay tuned for a spicy alternative take that should appear on the arXiv later this week! 🧪🔭

you'd think the forced displacement of 10 million people from one of the oldest centres of civilisation in human history would get a little more news attention than beltway journalists writing essays on how Olivia Nuzzi is a genius because they want to bone her and you'd be wrong

In addition to legal experts @envirojustice.bsky.social , I'd add that environmental & conservation science experts also call for real reform, not more rhetoric, slippery words, and confident endorsements or centrist exhortations that are flatly wrong

UMass Amherst Researchers Create Nanoparticle Vaccine That Prevents Cancer in Mice | UMass Amherst The vaccine also proves highly effective at preventing cancer’s deadly spread.

If you’re hearing news about a cancer break-through and wonder what’s hype and what’s not, here’s a good explainer of the actual findings in animal studies.

This is some elegant science that pulls together several lines of long-standing inquiry, and yes, it’s a BFD.

With a current value of $0.001 per ton, it does not look like coal will be making a comeback in the United States. That's the outcome from a recent coal lease bid for *subsidized* coal. They lowered the royalty rate (& cut environmental regulations) to encourage the sale. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨💧🔋 A short 🧵

Australia’s only shrew has been declared extinct. Australia leads the world in mammal extinctions and ranks second for loss of biodiversity. We need better funding for conservation action and stronger environmental laws to uphold our international commitments to prevent further extinctions 🧪

Arts degrees to cost $50,000 until at least 2027 despite Albanese reform promises, vice-chancellor says Government mustn’t lose sight of need for critical thinkers who develop ‘philosophy about the world’ by studying the arts

The cost of kicking real reform down the road.

For more than three years I’ve been calling for reform of the failed JRG program alongside colleagues on the crossbench.

If govt wants to fix intergenerational inequity this is a great place to start.

'Revolving door' between politics and lobbying rings transparency alarm bell Lobbying has become big business, with around 727 lobbyists registered in the national capital, more than three times the number of elected officials sitting in parliament.

This is how broken our lobbying laws are.

Every resources minister since 2001 went on to work for fossil fuel companies & 8 ex-ministers & senior advisers now lobby for gambling💰

It's time for complete reform of lobbying rules + independent watchdog.

As Measles Exploded, Officials in Texas Looked to CDC Scientists. Under Trump, No One Answered. - KFF Health News Trump officials sowed fear and confusion among CDC scientists, slowing their response to the measles outbreak in West Texas. Cases surged and sparked new outbreaks across the U.S. and Mexico. Together...

As measles took off in Texas, the Trump administration took actions that prevented CDC scientists from responding.

The outbreak became the biggest in 30 yrs. It’s far larger considering the outbreaks it sparked in other states & Mexico. kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

Summary of this ruling from a science perspective:

- Three-judge panel at the 9th Circuit: Clinton, Obama, Biden appointees refused to restore terminations during litigation.

- Lower court found grant terminations violate the APA (arbitrary and capricious), 1A, and statutory agency missions.

🧪 So, does this mean that Columbia caved to the tune of $220M and, surprise, still doesn’t get their NIH grants back? This is just absurd. Congress *should* be pissed.
