One of our editors at SABR just pointed out we ought to retire the phrase “men in blue” now that women umpires are (finally!) coming to the major leagues.

I added: the phrase is also anachronistic because the umpires so rarely wear blue!

Shibe Park team - noticed Shibe Park hosted over 3,000 fans during events. When did the AC last get checked before summer events?

A nearby historical landmark we inspected nearby had filters months overdue, airflow had dropped before summer events.

Just want to make sure your units are good to go before summer. What's the best number to call you?

Okay, it's not just writers getting inundated by AI-generated fake emails offering services. Check this one out I just got at my SABR email from a supposed HVAC service company offering to check out the systems at Shibe Park.

(The last game at Shibe was in 1970 and the park was demolished in 1976.)

Oh we get all kinds of spam! At least the baseball uniform offers are vaguely related…? But I got one yesterday asking if SABR needed to change our towel and laundry service…?

I haven’t seen something this weird in a long time. I submitted a bug report on this one!

Their hilarious sales pitch begins, "Shibe Park team - noticed Shibe Park hosted over 3,000 fans during events. When did the AC last get checked before summer events?"

Unfortunately a ton of the 24 hour ones cut back in 2020 so very few are real 24 diners anymore. Some only on weekends. And so many diners are sitting on prime real estate, can’t blame em for cashing out. Every time I come back to NJ another diner I ate in as a kid is now a CVS.

From the Sox:

The Red Sox have moved the start time of their game tomorrow, Sunday, April 19, against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park from 1:35 p.m. to 4:35 p.m.

The change was made in consultation with MLB due to a forecast for an extended period of rain from mid-day into the afternoon.

I hope the person who came up with this pun was rewarded with another week of vacation, at the very least.

The plot thickens... it wasn't even the compression step that did it. It was me inserting a new first page. I think Esther is onto something with the idea that it's munging a setting bit somehow.

Nope. Anytime I insert a new first page, the author names go kerblooey. I'm using a piece of software called PDF Reader Pro to do it (because Adobe Acrobat Pro is outside my budget) and this is the first bug like this I've had! Wild.

Ooooh the plot thickens. When I insert a new first page which is a JPG, I can recreate this exact problem. Now to see what happens if I insert a new first page from a PDF...

Digging back into my version control, it's only like this after compression. Wild, eh?

The wild part is that I just checked the e-proof and the print edition looks fine. Somehow it's only the version I made for ebook distribution. So it happened during *compression* of the PDF, not the creation. And strangely, it's not *all* the text of that style, only certain examples.

Something went seriously wrong with the creation of this PDF...?! The names of the editors used to be right underneath the title. WTF...

There will be a whole chapter on language usage re: umpires in the forthcoming SABR style guide. I’m about to hand the manuscript in to @univnebpress.bsky.social

They’ll let him fly but he’ll go “4S” which means he’ll get searched within an inch of his life at each step by the TSA. (This is also what they do if you got your wallet stolen with your ID in it while traveling for example)

Have you tried the strawberry matcha version? There’s a cafe near me that hand whisks the matcha and then there’s a pool of strawberry jam muddled at the bottom of the glass. Great hot or cold!

This was more popular than a bobblehead night or replica ring day! Wild. I was hoping to get one so I could wear it to hockey games in Boston and make people lose their minds 😈
