Burning wood for power worse for climate than gas equivalent, report finds Research casts doubt on plans by UK government to offer subsidies for carbon capture attached to the power source

New Gas-Powered Data Centers Could Emit More Greenhouse Gases Than Entire Nations
A WIRED review of permits for data center projects using natural gas and linked to OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, and xAI shows they could emit more than 129 million tons of greenhouse gases per year.

New gas projects linked to just 11 data center campuses around the US have the potential to create more greenhouse gases than the country of Morocco emitted in 2024. Emissions estimates from air permit documents examined by WIRED show that these natural gas projects—which are being built to power data centers to serve some of the US’s most powerful AI companies, including OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, and xAI—have the potential to emit more than 129 million tons of greenhouse gases per year.

"Even if the actual emissions from these power plants end up being half of the emissions numbers on the permits, they still could create more greenhouse gas emissions than the country of Norway emitted in 2024"

A detail everyone is ignoring or forgetting.

Peter Mandelson masterminded Keir Starmer's reshuffle days before the scandal broke.

That is, while he was the US Ambassador.

This seems like quite an important detail!

The *entire Starmer project* needs to be understood as one big Jobs For The Boys operation. That’s why McSweeney - Labour’s squillionaire bungs officer - spent 2017-19 running around telling dejected MPs to hold tight, because he was going to hook them back up with their clout, status and freebies.

Burn in hell, Alex Jones.

The norwegian sovereign (oil) wealth fund, owning 3% ($2.7 billion) of the shares in BP PLC, agrees with the BP management and intends to vote against the (only) shareholder resolution (and against its own climate action plan) that asks BP to have a plan for surviving the energy transition.

I mean, this does somewhat fly in the face of *years* of very loud all-media insistence that the public were crying out for a Sensible, Moderate, Forensic Centrist Twunt to crush the traitors and bring Britain back to the path of righteousness

Very insensitive of those in Asian countries to be complaining about fuel rationing and long queues at petrol stations; have some respect for the happiness being felt around Norwegian oil company share prices please

- Petroleumsindustrien går nok litt i søvne.

Absurd!

Compliment machine giving compliments.

Utbyttefest i olja💸

Chart of the Week
This chart from Latitude Intelligence shows announced power deals by major hyperscalers in 2026, broken down by clean energy and natural gas. Google is the only company to have made significant clean energy announcements this year, which may underscore why its gas news landed differently than similar moves by its peers.

So far in 2026, 80% of big tech's power procurement has been fossil gas (a bit more if you go by gen)

Desperation, ideology and material, deepening relationships between big tech and fossil fuels gets you the exact situation we have been warning about for years.

7. Generative AI Will Not Help Us Fight Climate Change
You might have heard the claim that AI will help us solve climate change, issuing innovative solutions like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat. Tech leaders have pointed to the possibility as though it could outweigh data centers’ environmental harms. But the truth is, claims of AI’s usefulness to the climate fight are vastly overstated.

As a recent report explains, “virtually all stated climate benefits relate to ‘traditional’ AI” — not the generative tools like chatbots and image creators that are driving the industry’s recent growth.

Moreover, claimed benefits are seldom based on research or real-world uses. In other words, Big Tech says AI is an important tool to fight climate change, while virtually none of the generative AI driving the boom is actually being used to fight climate change.

Sam Altman Says It'll Take Another Year Before ChatGPT Can Start a Timer An $852 billion company, ladies and gentlemen.

Putting aside Sam Altman just continuing to emit huge lies constantly, this is an amazing example of what I mean when I talk about how GenAI is replacing *extremely low energy* digital tasks with *WAY WAY HIGHER ENERGY* replacements that *do not even work*

Why TF is anyone using ChatGPT as a timer!
