What's your approach to planning out longer running stories like Misfits in Toyland? Do you have a long term plan for it or are you just following where the story takes you chapter by chapter?

I find whenever a video from a Pokemon TCG content creator crosses my feed it's about collecting and grading, or complaining about scalping. It's nearly never about playing the game. Anyway this rant brought to you by my being asked about grading by a family member.

Again this isn't all of them but it's a large enough part of the group to shift the cultural dynamic within it, and it does so in a way that buys into what the scalpers and grifters are trying to profit off of. The hobby becomes increasingly focused on one upping the rest of the fandom.

But the Pokemon community can't help themselves. It feels like every time I crossover with the fandom, more and more of it are obsessed with seeking that PSA 10 card. That an increasing number just want the fanciest collection possible rather than actually playing the game.

Or like how right now One Piece TCG is dealing with scalpers trying to muscle into it, and the fandom is just not engaging with them, beyond selling off fancy bulk to the idiots trying to scalp the market. You shut them out and eventually most of them fuck off.

I remember when people tried to buyout reserve list Magic cards to cause price spikes. Prices went up but there was still the same amount of interest in those cards that there had been before. Nobody was treating them like they were suddenly the hottest thing you could own.

Don't get me wrong, in every fandom there's always groups of addicts who enable scalpers and other parasites that try to grift off of it, but it's only Pokemon where the majority of the fanbase can't help but dive headfirst into every element of what draws the grifters to hobbies.

Saw people complaining about the many issues effecting the Pokemon TCG collector scene right now and really, it's the wider community's fault. I've played a bunch TCGs over the years and seen price spikes and attempted buyouts and all sorts of nonsense. And most communities don't stand for it.

These are really cool. Going through a Chronicles of Darkness phase at the moment so would definitely love to hear more about Rose if you're up for sharing

It doesn't really make the game more accessible though. It still has a bunch of stuff paywalled behind a £50 Switch game, including arguably the best Pokémon in this new format and doesn't provide a proper tutorial to help onboard new players beyond the bare minimum of fire beat grass etc

Last Pokemon Champions post. Tatora is clearly living her best life after coming out. I'm here to support her every step of the way. Everything about her from her outfit, the colour scheme, the way she does her hair to try and account for her hairline, and the way she acts hits home with me.

But this isn't the start of a new generation. WiWa aren't releasing until next year. By doing this they're interfering with new players' attempts to learn the basics of competitive Pokemon by denying them access to the basic tools they need to practice ready for it.

Set a limited pool for the in game events to get things going whilst also making everything available for free play so players can learn from the teams others are playing else.

If I want to get better at Magic, I look at what good players are using and copy them to practice. Champions can't do that

And my counter to that is that it makes no sense in the modern competitive environment of any game. We have regionals happening at the moment for Pokemon, Champions is supposed to be the new on ramp for new competitive players and they have no way of replicating the teams being used in SV

I would counter that with the fact that the meta doesn't need to be defined by the Pokemon in the game. They could have had the meta for the in game season be the Pokemon currently available, and have everything else available for open play, therefore ready for regionals.

Why should we accept the absolute bare minimum from one of the most successful franchises in the history of the world?

It's not even that it's a mobile game on Switch either. This time last year I started playing a mobile game, SD Gundam G Generation Eternal. That was launched with a starting roster of over 500 hundred playable mobile suits, each with unique animations. Every pilot you could recruit was voiced.

There's no reason it can't have all the many items its missing, or voice acting, or 6v6 battles.

There's no reason it needs a predatory battle pass with mechanically unique items locked behind it to pay for itself.

There's no reason they can't have given a roadmap for future updates.

Every model and animation in the game is an asset flip from previous games. There's no reason that Champions couldn't have launched with every Pokemon from SV, the Hidden Treasure DLC and Legends Z-A.

There's no reason it couldn't have a competent tutorial about competitive Pokemon for new players.

To be clear, if you're enjoying the game more power to you, but you have to see the flaws in it, and that this is a pattern of behaviour the Pokemon Company has engaged in since the games jumped to the Switch. And every game sells like gangbusters despite the increasing flaws.
