It’s hard to imagine a less sympathetic First Lady in the history of our country. Also, less empathetic as well.

But this will increase lack of institutional independence. The state will require all sorts of cuts universities won’t like and they will want to end program duplication. The “good news” is that states are unlikely to want to significantly spend more.

And don’t get me started on athletics.

Program cuts do save money but they won’t increase students. You can’t student services like campus amenities as this is how student can choose a school. There really is only one answer and that is a return to state investment and lowering tuition.

Obviously admin cuts must be a hard and painful step. If you are a professor, this won’t affect you as much as it used to as many admin functions that used to support faculty programs were transferred to faculty in the last 15 years.

Higher Ed folks perhaps also follow finances in higher Ed through the @chronicle.com
