Many of us know they’re harmful, but what’s often overlooked is how these harms overlap. When more than one of these products is involved, the impact on health doesn’t just add up - it multiplies.
In collaboration with Yorkshire Cancer Research and the 15 local authorities across the region, we’re telling real stories of how smoking his impacted our community.

The campaign tells the real-life story of Wendy from Cleethorpes who quit smoking and survived both kidney and lung cancer. Her daughter, Amy who lives in Hull and is 8 months pregnant, stars alongside her – she quit smoking after seeing what her mum went through.
Today marks the launch of our Turn the Corner campaign across Yorkshire and the Humber - encouraging the region’s 562,000 smokers to make a quit attempt.
Two powerful stories. One life-saving message.
This isn’t simply about individual choice. It’s about the environments people live in - shaped by the industries that produce, market and normalise these health-harming products.
Real change happens when we work together, shift the narrative, and create healthier environments for everyone.
As we prepare to launch our stop smoking campaign, we’re reminded of the power of a shared vision to tackle the three biggest drivers of preventable ill health.
Too many lives are lost by tobacco, alcohol and obesity. The greatest harm is experienced in our most disadvantaged communities.
This gap in awareness matters. People can only make informed choices about their health when they have clear, accurate information.
That’s why our work is focused on the three biggest killers to reduce the number of people impacted by cancer and preventable illness.

According to CRUK, 54% cases of bowel cancer are preventable.
Alcohol, smoking & obesity are key modifiable risk factors but only 37% of people in NYH know that factors like obesity are linked to cancer.

There is still more to do. Around 1 in 20 mums-to-be across Humber and North Yorkshire continue to smoke throughout pregnancy.
Ensuring every woman has access to the right support at the right time - remains key to continue the progress we have made.
This follows the introduction of a new model of stop smoking support for pregnant women, rolled out nationally as part of the NHS Long Term Plan. This has been strengthened by a national financial incentive scheme, introduced in 2025, to support pregnant smokers to quit.
The latest data from NHS England shows that the number of women smoking during pregnancy across HNY continues to be at record low levels.
The SATOD rate for 25/26 so far is the lowest ever recorded since data collection began.
Obesity is a key driver of health inequalities in our region resulting in reduced life expectancy and illness.
Our research found that 73% of people in NYH support measures like clearer nutritional labelling.
We need a clear strategy to tackle obesity and the unhealthy food that drives it.

This is really positive news. Well done to the Stop Smoking services across Humber and North Yorkshire who play an important role in helping us to achieve our vision of a smokefree region.
Data shows the rise in people using Stop Smoking Services locally is significantly higher than the increase nationally. Across Yorkshire and Humber as whole, there has been a 22% increase this year compared to 2024/25.
Our research found that there is strong support across HNY for legislation targeted at unhealthy food.
Protecting young people from a lifetime of illness linked to obesity and helping them to make informed food choices must be a priority.
