“I can tell you, as somebody who has been a natural resources trustee, who has had to negotiate with copper companies in my own state, that this type of copper mining has never been done without polluting the water. Never, not once,” he said in a floor speech before the vote.

Photo at sunrise of Kahekili Beach on Maui. There are bushes in the foreground, then the sandy beach, then the blue Pacific Ocean. There is a small sailboat in the middle distance. In the background is the island of Lanai, with clouds in the sky above.
Good morning from Kahekili Beach on the beautiful island of Maui. Let's make it a great day.

A photo of a sunset over the Pacific Ocean, with a sailboat to the left of the setting sun. Photo taken from Ka'anapali Beach on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
I was about to say, wow you're early...then I remembered I'm on Maui and on Hawaiian time.

Trump is clearly not fit to serve.
That’s why I am co-sponsoring a 25th Amendment bill with @raskin.house.gov.
Our country cannot afford having a madman in power.

It just occurred to me that yes, in fact, I would prefer W over the filth we have now, and that is wild. I despised W and counted the days until he was gone. But what we have now is so, so much worse.

Trump continues to crater. New NBC poll has his approval down to 37-63, which is 26 points underwater.
Crucially, 50% disapprove *strongly.* Has any other president had half the country strongly disapproving?

Opening text of a thread by Palantir from X
Because we get asked a lot.
The Technological Republic, in brief.
1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.
2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.
3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.
4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.
Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

Think hard about the fact that history is going to show you for the fascists you are, just as we can search and find Nazis, and we know who supported them. This is a stain that will last your lifetime.

Confidential memos by Supreme Court justices, obtained by The New York Times, show how they decided to bypass time-tested procedures and create the modern “shadow docket,” a rushed and secretive new way of doing business. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/18/u...

I am not a lawyer, but am I reading correctly that the majority opinion cited the concern of “irreparable harm” to the coal industry (which employs ~40,000 people) with no mentions of the “irreparable harm” higher CO2 emissions could bring to the population of (at the time) ~7,500,000,000 people?

Missouri's murder rate is 73% HIGHER than California’s.
No amount of right-wing spinning can change reality: our state is investing in prevention, enforcement, and is holding criminals accountable.
The U.S. Senator from Missouri should fix his own failed policies before lecturing us.
