the result? Elena as the hero, impaled by 3 swords (which is a significant number but I can’t tell you why bc spoilers 😉). I LOVE the details of this piece, especially the lighting, her faceless pain, the cut of her battlesuit. Ngoc did AMAZINGGGG
I found this artwork on Pinterest (artist: wifihunters on tumblr) and was moved by the pain, the emotion, and the anonymity of the subject. I sent this artwork to Ngoc as well as a few notes, and we got to work.
for the hero, I really wanted to focus on the idea of sacrifice. a hero bears the burden of people’s expectations and dreams, and Elena bears her country’s survival on her shoulders. she is constantly beaten down, and yet still, she rises.
I worked with the lovely Ngoc Nguyen (who made artwork for the first book, The Phoenix King) to create three “cards” of Elena for the sequel: the villain, the hero, and the conqueror.
This artwork I commissioned of my character Elena Aadya Ravence for The Burning Queen is going viral on fantasy booktok and I wanted to share the BTS of its creation!
