We have a smorgasbord of maps for you, all from the same front page of the Daily Dispatch…. Not a lot of space to show Norway, The Bulge and The Philippines…. Poor old @merrynwalters.uk is having a fit
Our photo of the week is all about the diversity of the sprawling conflict, Sikh sappers, sailor girls, German generals and prefab housing… it’s got it all!

There’s lots more news: Bedford bus fiascos, Himmler Volssturm nerves, and news from the battle for Budapest. @AndyAitcheson and @rentaquill will update you on the lot linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar
Here’s our archive in action! Great to see it and we’d love to see more of it. Please go to our Patreon to get access and support what we do (another thousand archive wallets ordered yesterday and sixty more storage boxes - over £500 spent on ‘logistics’ of managing this just this week).
The more No. 75 the “Hawkins” grenade, the less I like it. So many accidents in the war. This case is different, the Sgt instructor was fucking about with a live mine in a lecture… the cardinal rule in the RE was TREAT DUMMY AS LIVE

Thanks to @vickersmg.bsky.social 🫡
We also talked with John @badsocialism.bsky.social about African American troops in Britain. The insane mental gymnastics the US army has to go through to continue segregation and Jim Crow laws in a country where officially there’s no segregation laws.

Thank you James. Really appreciate this 🫡
This was an absolute pleasure to record: thanks to @andyaitch.bsky.social and @merrynwalters.uk for having me on!
Absolutely brilliant guest editor special this week!!
We were so lucky to have John Concah @badsocialism.bsky.social come on and take us through how the newspapers talked about the Atlantic charter, Caribbean and West Indian experience in wartime Britain and much much more.

I love this illustration by Bryan De Grineau, from the ILN. It reminds me a little of the photo of 155 Inf Bde with 8th Amd Bde before Blackcock (shared by SRY association).
I think it says something about the relaxed professionalism of 21st Army Group in 1945.

One of the headlines stood out this week: the effects of war on the people fighting it. The transition from frontline during to the relative safety of London was too much for some.

All human life is here, including murdering Frenchies. @andyaitch.bsky.social is on a tear about the KOSBs. As an aside when I was 14/15 I met a former ‘tail end Charlie’, no B/S or boastful claims. He told me he thinks, couldn’t be sure, that he saw Gibson’s Mossie go down. Flew into terrain.
Come on… what other podcast provides you with instructions on how to down a jet engined aeroplane??
This weeks ep - 4th November 1944.

By late June a lot of the stories from D-Day were coming out. The intrepid reporter Leonard Mosley dropped with 6th Airborne on the 6th of June and reported on the death of 7 Para Padre, George Parry. Here’s a clip of Mosley hanging around Windy Gales HQ on the 11th of June.

Aw James, you’re too kind. I’m really glad you enjoyed it
🚨 Listen lads, I can’t stress enough how VERY IMPORTANT it is that two absolute idiots do an EMERGENCY PODCAST episode about the situation in Iran (Persia) between 1939 and 1945. 🚨
Very serious and very important, okay?
linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar
Incredibly serious and important EMERGENCY PERSIA (or Iran) POD
Tomorrow linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar
Thanks James! They definitely are real
If you want a laugh, you could spend a few minutes listening to me try and explain Frank Aiken and the Republic of Irelands neutrality during the Second World War.
I think you can audibly hear @rentaquill wince at one point.
