Yesterday, The Ethiopian Health Care Professionals Movement called a pause to the four week long strike to return to work on Monday 9, June while it regroups and prepares for next steps. The crisis remains unresolved and several health care workers are still in detention.

Ethiopia ranks 141/180 in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index, with journalists facing arrests, restrictions, and legal challenges despite media reforms. The certification is said to recognize journalists, combat misinformation, and promote accountability among journalists.
Details remain unclear regarding data privacy protections, appeals process for denied certification, and how journalists, especially freelancers & foreign correspondents will be assessed beyond proving employment or published work.
The Ethiopian Media Council to (EMC) begin certifying journalists based on education or work experience. Certified journalists will get a QR code-linked ID. The system aims to “differentiate journalism from activism”, a distinction open to interpretation. @pressfreedom.bsky.social
