I can’t in good conscience vote for something that is tried and proven as bad policy. This is a rebranded version of the tough-on-crime laws of the past – a curfews-first approach that’s ineffective because it fails to support our youth.

All of those things go together and if we don't adequately pay them, we will not have enough educators to do any of the rest. The Mayor cuts this each year, knowing that the Council will then have to do the work of finding the needed funds from somewhere else. This is not how this should work.

children AND support the workers without whom it would not be possible.

If we want affordable access for all families, we must pay educators fairly, credential them well, reduce red tape for opening new facilities, expand in-home care, and ensure adequate subsidies for families that need them.

Every year we fight over the Pay Equity Fund to support salaries for early childhood educators. Now the Mayor wants to cut it again. Today we learned that the Mayor sees the Fund only as a way to support salaries. I see it as a way to build and sustain a robust high quality childcare system for all

What if every medium-sized building had space for 10% more units? The Council gave unanimous approval to my bill, which frees up more room for housing, one of several measures I'm pushing to address our housing shortage.

In addition to my major housing production finance overhaul, I’m introducing two other bills to address the need for more affordable housing by making it more feasible and attractive to build much-needed housing in the District.

The Housing Production Trust Fund has built lots of housing in DC – it can do even more. @robertwhitedc.bsky.social and I have introduced a bill that would replace it with a Housing Opportunity Fund - a more robust and modern financing mechanism to speed up building more housing.

The other bill would update building code to allow for more apts & larger apts at lower cost by eliminating the req for 2 staircases in smaller buildings. With modern fire suppression & design, small multifamily buildings with single entry are just as safe or more safe than buildings with 2 stairs.

One, the Fair Share Housing Targets bill, would require the Mayor to set housing targets every five years. Mayor Bowser set goals in 2019 and we met them! Which is great, but we need to keep that going.

@cmcharlesallen.bsky.social & @cmlewisgeorgew4.bsky.social co-introduced.

It’s one of 3 bills I’ve introduced to bolster production of affordable housing in DC & it will be taken up by the Housing Committee on Monday. You can learn more about this & the other bills at brianneknadeau.com/news.

The Fund will have 5 sub-accounts: to build new housing & rehabs, subsidize deeply affordable units, preserve existing affordable homes, help tenants purchase their homes & allow DC to buy & lease land in support of affordable development.

With the Office of Planning making weak plans, I’m working multiple angles, including an overhaul of the Housing Production Trust Fund, setting housing targets, and removing unnecessary barriers to maximizing construction.

I’ve made affordable housing one of my top priorities since I was first elected to the Council in 2014. I’ve put thousands of units of housing in the pipeline here in Ward 1where we’ve exceeded housing targets by 50%. brianneknadeau.com/commitment-t...

I thank DC Dept. on Disability Services Dir. Reese for embracing this law and ensuring it is implemented with fidelity & enthusiasm. I thank Ricardo & Donna and the many people in the developmental disability community who continue to advocate.

It is one of the things I am most proud of in my tenure as Councilmember.

We believed from the start in the moral obligation to ensure that people with developmental disabilities have the support they need to live full lives in community, across the course of their lives.

Making a law that expanded support for adults with developmental disabilities was one of the most meaningful things I did as Human Services Committee chair. I'm truly honored - not just by the Advocate Equity Award but by the opportunity to have played a role in this incredible work.

needed to address the shortage of affordable housing. We must aggressively pursue more housing in all parts of the city. I have a lot of questions for the Office of Planning, and the Council will have a lot of work to do to get the map on track for building housing everywhere that we need it.
